My Story

10 Apr 2019

Once again, this June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! I will be thinking of the kids AND will be remembering my son Martin always since he was an avid, amazing and daring bike rider! He'll be riding right along with me, I know it. :)

Right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • I did it!
    30 Jun 2019

I did a local ride with Rob to Bragg Creek where we met up with Shirley at Moto Cafe ( our go-to cafe when we have been riding around here). We then rode to the Trading Post along the Elbow River. While there we met a young man who was quite lost and struggling and so helped him get back to the people who were looking for him. It is interesting the little stories that happen along the way...... but then isn't that the way in life? I'm all about the stories. :)

This ride has been a challenge in many ways this year. Firstly I realized that my stamina is no where near what it was last year at this time. The last eight months has emotionally and physically had an effect on me but at least the biking has helped in that sense. Then there was the weather - it was quite a typical June with rain, cool temps, (even snow one evening) and of course wind. Last June was so different with all the hot dry weather. And then there were the back issues that I had for a few days and some bike problems. No matter. The kids who fight cancer every day have it a lot worse than my little problems. Their challenge is much bigger and I kept realizing that every time I had a little problem. :)

I would like to thank everyone who supported me in the challenge in all the ways possible. I was able to raise over $1700 and am extremely happy with that. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

    30 Jun 2019

June 29. It took Nora and me a bit of searching and asking but we managed to find the trail loop that I tried to find about 10 days ago. Locals know it well for but out-of-towners this is not at all an obvious trail. We had fun though. Stopped along the way and saw the historic oil site, took our time, stopped at Vale's greenhouse, and had late lunch at the 50's diner that used to be the only theatre back in the oil days.

I was able to get 33 km in today but not without problems! I went to Cochrane to ride in the sunshine (YAY!) and the wind. At one point I stopped to have a snack and water and while doing that my bike was blown over and came crashing to the ground. Not good, really not good. Things got a bit bent up and I had no way of fixing them . I luckily was only about 2 km from a bike shop and was able to walk there. Along the way I met a lady from Ottawa who was very lost in Cochrane and we walked together so I got her to the place she was going and of course talked about Ottawa! Damien at Bike Bros thankfully was able to fix things on my bike - mostly the crash bent things and they could all be made right again. The last 11 km of the day I did just around home. Only 32 km more to go!

The wildfowers are beautiful along the pathways now.

I rode 30 km today and managed to get out for the ride just before the rain clouds moved in. Whew! Animals seen en route: one deer, lots of ground squirrels, and horses. Things heard: Many kinds of birds, ground squirrels, the rushing Elbow River, a bit of thunder, and cars. Things smelled en route: one skunk! :(

My friend Nora and I biked over to and around Bragg Creek and managed to get into a cafe just right as the rain started. It has been tricky trying to time rides so that we aren't in downpours! It's rained a lot, the river is a bit high and murky from the snow melt and the rain, but it is within the normal levels for this time of the year. Thankfully.

Just 96 km to go to reach my goal of 500 km and I've reached my donation goal of $1500 so I'm pretty happy about it all. :) Thanks to everyone!

Today I was riding for Ride Don't Hide so kind of doing double duty you might say. It was a ride of 550 people riding 10, 20, 50 or 105 km. I rode the 20 km in 1 hr 5 minutes and dedicated the ride to Martin. This was the fundraiser for Canadian Mental Health Assoc. across Canada raising awareness of mental health and donations of course for their services. My neighbour Lynda rode the 50 km. It was a rainy and cold day to start and being the fairweather rider that I am this was an experience in itself! Luckily the rain stopped after the first 12 km of my ride. It was a rather hilly ride but a very fun one. It was my first time doing this sort of thing and it won't be my last! Rob was a great support and he is now thinking of doing it next year, as is my neighbour's husband. She told one friend and she told one friend........

Today we had a break from the rain, at least at times, so I drove to Turner Valley/ Black Diamond to check out some trails there. Ideally I wanted to do a loop but in Black Diamond I had trouble finding the route that looped back to Turner Valley. I now know where it is so I will do that again some other day. :) And yes, there were some fallen rocks on the pathway no doubt brought down in the heavy rain yesterday.

  • June 18th - sketchy weather and another unreliable bike!
    19 Jun 2019

My e-assist bike that I have been riding had to be fixed so I have ridden the last couple of days on my clunker named Nellybelle. And the chain came off of it yesterday too....I'm getting good at putting it back on though. :)

I now have my new bike back, (Lulubelle is her name) all ready to go again thanks to Lorin and Aidin. It's a day off though I think because my back is really hurting again (!) and I have to make sure I'm in good shape to do the Ride Don't Hide this Sunday June 23rd. Off to the chiropractor again this afternoon. As you can see in the photo the weather was what chased Shirley and me back to the coffee shop.....not going THAT way! There was hail in that could.

    17 Jun 2019

I cannot figure out why these are being posted with the wrong date!

It is June 16th. Stopped at Tim's before riding and got a Boston Cream donut. Why? Because that was my Dad's favourite kind of donut and it is Father's Day. Called my Mom too while I was eating it and overlooking the Bow River. We both toasted to Dad. Trouble is I had sort of forgot that the chocolate coating on the donut would melt in my bike bag! It still tasted wonderful.

June 16th. I got to over 300 km today.

Well it was a fairly hot day today but I'm not complaining. This is what we have been waiting for! Since last at the ranch a week ago many more of the wildflowers have come out and the Bow R is up quite a bit and is that beautiful green/blue colour. I took off on some of the gravel pathways and I must say it was quite a slog on that gravel going uphill. Had to get off and walk the rest of the way up one of them.

    16 Jun 2019

June 15. (Don't know why it registers as the 16th)

There are so many walking/riding pathways in Cochrane and I am having a nice time just exploring them, and seeing new areas that I never knew existed in fact. Today took me on many trails - paved, dirt, in town, through forest, along the Bow River, past play parks, babbling brooks and through a very large off-leash dog park. I can tell you that at 10 in the morning on a sunny Saturday that is THE busy time in the dog park. About a million dogs I think ......big, small, all shapes and sizes and abilities. It was smart for me to just get off and walk since dogs don't really care if someone is on a bike or not before darting gleefully across the path in front of an oncoming bike. I was going very slowly but when there are that many dogs anything can happen!

Today I also had the chance to help a teenage girl get the chain back on her bike properly. To tell you the truth I didn't really know what I was doing but it worked! She was happy and I felt quite proud....Hah! I did it! :)

    13 Jun 2019

Ever since planting the flowers in the pots about ten days ago my lower back has given me problems. So off to the chiropractor I went yesterday, he worked some magic on it, but he also told me to take 24 hours off of the riding to let it settle down. Aaaaallriiiight.......sigh. But I'll be back out tomorrow!
