In memory of Arlene Mulder Papaioannou and all the kids still fighting cancer

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child! . Please help me to reach my goal of $15,000 or more this year. I’m trusting that I can count on your support again this year....will YOU be the one that pushes my numbers over the top? You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

3 May 2026

This year I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer again!

Why? Because right now, over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. Let that sink in for a minute......1700 every year. While, unfortunately, some of those kids will NOT survive their cancers, but many do but remain in treatments. Then, the next year, and every year thereafter, another 1,700 kids are added to that. I have a friend in the GCC community who rides in memory of her baby sister, who passed away 56 years ago......that's 56 times 1,700 minus the ones who succumbed to the disease. That's a LOT of kids, and requires a lot of money.....THIS IS WHY WE RIDE AND FUNDRAISE!

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

My rides in 2023, 2024 and 2025 have surpassed my goal of $15,000 each year, so my starting goal for this year will be $15,000 again and will be adjusted as needed! I continue to bike in memory of my daughter Arlene, and riding and fundraising for all those still in the fight. I am hoping that you will continue to support me by sponsoring. YOU SPONSOR AND I WILL DO THE BIKING! Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Please check out my previous years stats in the sidebar on the left bottom of the page....$189,395.05 and counting, over the last nine years! YOU all helped me achieve that, and for that I am forever grateful!

This will be my last year doing this challenge, so I am really hoping to finish strong this year, but for that to happen, I need A LOT of support!

Your support will change little lives.

    12 Aug 2026

Well, after staying up until 12 midnight (well I actually fell asleep for a bit), I spent the next couple of hours entering the donations into the Great Cycle Challenge page. Everything balanced perfectly, so off to bed I go.....only to toss and turn and not be able to sleep. Short night here, so no biking for me today. It's been raining anyhow, so going to take a rest day today. I am almost half way finished my riding goal, but I have achieved my fundraising goal. That doesn't mean more donations are not welcome, as the need to help kids fighting cancer continues to exist. If you have not made your donation yet, or want to make a donation that has a real impact, TODAY, AUGUST 12, 2026, MATCH DAY - that's the day to make a donation. And just look how you all helped me blow the mercury right out of that thermometer!!!!!!

AMAZING SUPPORT FROM SO MANY PEOPLE! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

    12 Aug 2026

Today was a day of updating files and sending out reminders for Match Day tomorrow. Laundry seems to always show up from somewhere! I got another 10 km ride in after dinner! The temperature after dinner is much better for cycling but it also is noticeable that the days are getting shorter!

    11 Aug 2026

It's been a busy day today, Rain in the morning meant I had time to deal with some over ripe peaches. Was not able to make jam this year, but did manage to bottle four jars of peaches. Spent some time this afternoon working on my book, and then after dinner managed another ride since the day was not as rainy as had been predicted. Have to get those kilometers done before the end of August, so slow and steady should get it done.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT MATCH DAY ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2026

“Thank you so much Albert and Nelly for your continued support for this cause that is dear to my heart. Tomorrow would have been Arlene's 57th birthday, so definitely a more emotional day for us. I am gad Nelly is enjoying the "throw" everyday! I am trying to think of something creative to offer this year, but so far have come up empty.....I am running out of ideas I guess, although I suspect most people donate for the cause, not the prize! Take care and make sure you connect the next time you are out this way!”
