My Story

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Together, we can save little lives.

Thanks for your support.

Neale

My Challenge

  • Welland - Canal - St. Catharines
    31 Aug 2022

I finished the Great Cycle Challenge with a 121 km ride on a beautiful day. My route took me through Silverdale and Fenwick to Welland where I joined the H2O Trail [Canal]. As I was enjoying the beautiful scenery along the trail I noticed that the Rice Krispie guys - Snap, Crackle, Pop - seemed to have attached themselves to my bike. I had noticed this a bit yesterday, but had lubed the wheel hubs. As I made my way through Thorold and past Lock 7 the noise got worse so since I was near the bike shop I decided to stop in and get their opinion. Turned out I needed a front hub rebuild, which Scott did while I waited. The guys there are so good to me. After that was attended to I made my way down to St. Catharines & after leaving the trail stopped at Bulk Barn for some grind your own peanut butter [it's the best - only peanuts and fresh], then rode through the city and joined the Waterfront Trail and eventually returned home. The wind was strong so my homeward journey was much slower. I am thankful for all the encouragement and support people have given me this month as I tried to ride 3000 km and raise $3000 to fight kids cancer. I am thankful to God for the strength to ride, safety and a bike that kept going. I was able to achieve both goals thanks to your support - 3600 km and $3023 raised.

  • Meandering around West Lincoln
    30 Aug 2022

The weather forecast promised rain today. I managed to get in 40 kms before it started, but completed the last 62 kms in the rain. I saw some deer on Sixteen Rd. One was standing on the road. I slowed down and was just about to stop and see if I could get a picture when she turned and ran back into the field. Then two younger ones took off following her. Later I rode past "Ostrichland" and could see one ostrich. Also at the beginning of my ride I passed the scene of another crash at the corner of Port Davidson & Sixteen. A tow truck was just starting to load one of the vehicles and two police cars were present. Hopefully no one was hurt. I am thankful again for another safe ride. I am also grateful that I have been able to achieve my fundraising goal. Thank you to everyone who has supported me - and more importantly, gave to help fight kids cancer.

  • Dunnville and Lakeside
    29 Aug 2022

I started out about 8:30 am and it was already quite warm & breezy. I took an indirect route to Dunnville where I stopped for a meeting. Then I rode to Lake Erie. The wind off the lake was nice on a hot day. After riding through Lowbanks I headed back toward Dunnville and then on home. It was great to finish with the wind at my back. Once again I am thankful for safety and strength as I ride along with the prayers and support of many people. And with a couple more donations I am now almost to my fundraising goal.

  • Dunnville - Church - Wellandport
    28 Aug 2022

Today my ride was split up around two church services. I started out early in the morning & it was only 13 degrees which made the ride very envigorating. I rode through a very quiet town of Dunnville where there was a planned electrical outage. Most places were closed, except Tim Hortons which was doing a booming business. I also heard quite a few generators running. We had a wonderful relaxing outdoor service at Janice's [thanks Janice for hosting] followed by lunch and a great time visiting. Then I rode over to Wellandport where I led the afternoon service at Riverside CRC Church. Then I headed for Smithville and home. While it was certainly hot, the ride didn't feel too bad thanks to some breeze. It was a great day of cycling, worship, fellowship and food.

  • Stoney Creek - Binbrook
    27 Aug 2022

This morning there was a cool north wind that may riding refreshing. I took a round-about way into Stoney Creek where I visited the library and Bulk Barn then headed south to Binbrook. I toured around the town for a while before making my way back to Smithville. Along the way I saw a unicorn standing by the road and then a sign indicating two girls were celebrating their seventh birthday. I was thankful to be back in home territory and thankful for a safe trip.
