My Story

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • What an AMAZING month!!
    1 Sep 2020

YOU GUYS!! What an amazing 31 days!

The Great Cycle Challenge month is over and I completed the last of my kilometers just today. I did it!!

Yesterday was my biggest cycling accomplishment EVER, with a 100km ride! Just a couple weeks ago, I didn't think I could finish my challenge at all, let alone pull off a colossal century ride!! The donations and the encouragement from you and so many others gave me the second wind needed to achieve such a feat. You are the spinach to my Popeye, the Sun to my Superman, and the Star Power to my Mario. I am stronger because of you.

My fundraising goal was $3000, but you blew it out of the water and have collectively donated $4014 this month! Holy Guacamole, Batman!!

Donations can still be received through my Great Cycle Challenge page in September, so if you or anyone else hasn't had a chance to donate, there's still time to support this amazing cause. Funding childhood cancer research and providing support and care for families in their darkest hour will give all of us a better future.

My fundraising efforts reached a level where I will receive this year's hero jersey. Last year's hero jersey was Batman themed (as in the photo). This year's hero jersey has a Spiderman theme! (Eat your heart out, Tom Holland!). I can't wait for it to arrive so I can show it off to you! It will be an honor and a privilege to wear the hero jersey. It represents the perfect combination of your generous support and my commitment to the cause.

Thank you for helping me to stick to it. Thank you for being part of the fight against childhood cancer!

    What an AMAZING month!!

  • We've come so far!
    24 Aug 2020

I can't believe that three of the four weeks of The Great Cycle Challenge has already gone by! I have ridden 642km and been on my bike for 40 hours this month! Wow! That's a lot!

Last week was particularly rough for me. I wasn't sure I would make my goal. I was physically exhausted and emotionally spent. I felt horrible, drained, and defeated. I just couldn't muster the strength to get out and ride. I figured that was it! It was over. I wasn't going to do it. I was going to give up and call it quits.

I didn't do that, of course. Instead, I listened to my body. I absorbed the love and encouragement of friends and family cheering me on. I pondered the generosity of those who have donated to support my riding. I rested.

I'm feeling good this week. I have found my second wind and will ride that through to the end of the month (I hope!).

Thank you for your continued support. Knowing that you're cheering me on helps me so much to reach the finish line!!

With your donations so far, I have raised $3,544 toward fighting childhood cancer. That's AMAZING!

    We've come so far!

  • A rough start
    8 Aug 2020

I rode a total of 186 km in the first week of the Great Cycle Challenge!

It was a rough start with a very sore butt (that's what I get for not riding my bike before August 1st!), incredibly hot days, and a flat tire that I just couldn't get to hold my repairs. I finally gave in and took David (my bike) in to the shop to get the tire repaired properly. They were kind enough to adjust my gears when they noticed they were slipping. Thanks Cyclepath!

With the tire repaired, I should be able to ride freely, without anything getting in my way (except maybe the extreme fatigue and my tender sit-upon). I had a great start to week two of the challenge with a 56km ride today!

Thank you so much to those who have donated so far. You've put some gas in my tank, so to speak! Your donations are the ONLY reason I'm doing this challenge. I like riding my bike, don't get me wrong, but challenging myself to ride 850 km in such a short period of time is all for the kids. The funds will provide support for them and their families and will enable researchers to develop better treatments to get these kids back to living life instead of fighting for it!

Please encourage your family and friends to donate. We can make a difference.

    A rough start

  • Starting in just a few days
    29 Jul 2020

I met a family today who are cycling 11OO km over 16 days from Fernie to Kamloops, using the KVR and forestry roads. Crazy people, right!

It sounds like a great adventure, though, doesn't?

My own cycling adventure starts in just a few days. I have pledged to ride a total of 850km throughout August in the Great Cycle Challenge to raise money for childhood cancer research. That's an average of 27.4 km per day if I rode every single day. I'm only a little bit crazy, so I'll have to have rest days. Some of my rides will be longer and some will be short. I might even have to go for a ride in the morning and one in the evening on the same day!!

I'm not prepared and haven't even been on my bike yet this year! I will definitely have a tender backside for the first week or so (and my legs won't be too happy either), but it will be more than worth it for the sick kids and their families. No child should have to fight cancer and parents should never have to watch their child suffer and wonder if they will make it to their next birthday.

Cancer is a monster. It's scary and mean. We want to believe that it won't find us, but it can attack anyone at anytime. We need to find the weapons to fight it, to scare it off, to cage it, and to control it.

Funding the research is how we build up our arsenal. Funding support for the families is how we keep up the strength of the warriors in battle. I can't do the research and I am not in the battle, but I can ride. Think of me as riding ahead, raising my flag and blowing my trumpet to announce that it's time! This is a call to action.
