My Story

27 Aug 2020

Hello There Everyone...

It's pretty well the end of the campaign and I'm really happy with how things have turned out. Just amazing support from friends and family and some great rides and deservedly sore legs.

Thanks for participating. I hope it was meaningful yo you as much as it was for me

I'm just going to spin out the last 75k before work over the weekend but who knows what we'll see.

A tough but meaningful ride up Chimney Valley road (x2) . . 1st turn and I spotted a Great Blue Heron just perched and chillin' at the top of a scraggly little willow by the lake. I have no idea why they had been gifted with this compulsion or ability, but there it was.

On round #2, I rode up on about 20 or 30 crows hanging about the road. I saw no roadkill or a deceased member of their clan. They all took off as I approached and instead of scattering or peeling off to one side, they escorted me down the road for almost a kilometer. It was like riding through a Wyeth painting....so cool.

On both returns, the crickets or cicadas were trilling in the late afternoon sun. Flowing from one song, and riding through another and picking up the next two or three in canon was the best way to come home. The best.

Interesting thing about out 'n back rides. Every k forward translates into the same distance on the return. Now this might sound like a "duh" statement but it is very easy and tempting to just go a little more until you have quite a job to get back.

Last night was a good example. The ride was just going to be a little spinny 35k/35k but then...well make it 40/40 and break the 500k mark.......but look, this is fun, go the full 50 to the RA for the 100.

Nice views and intentionally choosing a route that climbed out probably saved my legs. Pulling out of Riske Creek on the last 15k was somewhat brutal though.

I thought you would like to meet the other part of team Wildebeast.

My 2016 Giant Defy Advanced is perfect for long rides and still can still sit up and go in a sprint.

We have logged many km together in four years and it has always urged me on with it's decisive shifting and rock solid steering.

It's all carbon and weighs in at 18.5 lbs. I was initially not a fan of disc brakes but feel super good about them now because the wheels don't need a heavy rim. Lighter material is spinning fastest...

Gears are good for Williams Lake area . . 50/34 rings and a 12-28 cassette. Lot's of choices for killer climbs and cruising the flats (if you can find any).

Weather is forcing another rest day so the bike and I will wait for a break and get out together ASAP.

  • Tour of Chimney Valley
    19 Aug 2020

So I pedaled every available metre of pavement in the low ground behind our place yesterday and had such a great ride. Tagged on Chimney Valley Road to Chimney Lake Road. Lot's of disinterested horses and cows watched this strange thing go by with no motor. Here is snap from the road. Barely any traffic ever and nice micro climbs.

  • Springhouse - Chimney Lake double out n' back
    13 Aug 2020

Yesterday's ride may not have been the longest this year but it was definitely the toughest. The Springhouse leg from my place starts with an exhilarating descent within the first 2km. It's not open brakes though, because the road is patched and uneven, anything over 70kph is pretty dicey.

So without really being warmed up, you have a 4.5k climb that is a steady 8% to level out for a bit and then more 8%. The rest of the out is steady rolling climb and very scenic. Westwick Lake Eco Reserve is beautiful in the late evening sun.

The turnabout point is at the pavement end about 22k and all the hard work getting there is rewarded by a fast and light return.

After 42k, you find yourself at Chimney Lake Road for the second out n' back. The ascents are much more reasonable and a decent pace can be set but save something for the last 2k home! I really like this ride because it overlooks Chimney Creek and some nice fields. It's common to see Kestrels and Red Tail Hawks hunting the valley from the powerlines beside the road.

Just like Springhouse, this is a rolling climb and a negative time split is guaranteed on the way back.

Almost Home!!! Just have to grind up the 1.8k of 9% (which I suspect has a chunk at 10) to get to Bush road and a well deserved glide back to the little house on Dog Creek Road. Find a gear, breathe, and don't look up until well past the driveway to Juniper Trails B&B.

930m of ascent packed into 82.2km. Avg Speed, 26.2 kph. Max Speed, 69.4 kph.

    9 Aug 2020

    Hey Everyone,

Just got a nice donation to the campaign from Laurie.

My goal is to match every kilometer I ride with the same dollar amount and so far my milage is just slightly ahead of the donations. If that was another rider I'd be breaking the wind and "pulling".

Help me get in the draft of the contributions by hitting the donate button and keep me on the road!!!

Here's a snap of Felker Lake from Chimney Lake Rd. Probably the most scenic ride in my neighbourhood.

    Thanks Sponsors!!!!!

    5 Aug 2020

The nice thing about living on the (more or less) high point of Dog Creek Road is that every ride starts with a super fun and sometimes scary descent. However, the Piper must be paid, and after 52 k....the ascent home is not very Pantani at all. So a good vertical 775m for my stats nerds...and a snap of beautiful Dugan Lake and Williams lake from a bike.

Here I am at the Mt. St. Anne GF in Quebec with an earlier version of my current Giant Defy.

A wet 160km made fun by joining a great group from Montreal and riding the last half at about 32kph avg.
