Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against stage IV colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child and so I ride to support kids who are fighting this horrible disease of cancer, but in Arlene’s memory. Please help me to reach my goal of $5000 this year. I’m almost there....will YOU be the one that pushes my numbers over the top? You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

5 Jun 2019

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight

in a battle against stage IV colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child and so I ride to support kids who are fighting this horrible disease of cancer, but in Arlene’s memory. I have reached my goal of $5000 this year, but there are still kids who have not gotten to go home, so I will continue to bike, while I am hopeful that you will continue to sponsor. YOU SPONSOR AND I WILL DO THE BIKING! Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

I was able to get out for a ride tonight after dinner......found a friend (not a GCC rider though) along the way, so we biked the Cami Loop together and then at the point where she would head home, we parted company and I did a few more kilometers, so a total of 19.6 km tonight. It was a lovely evening for a leisurely ride. I always love this view!

What a gorgeous day to get out for a ride today. Was finished work early so right after lunch I set out on a fun ride and picked up a few more sponsors along the way. Keeping on biking until the end of the month to raise awareness, and funds for Sick Kids Foundation! Unfortunately I forgot to add my pictures to my Relive ride so will see if I can figure out how to add them on my facebook page.

But what do you do when you cannot sleep? You think about GCC and ways to raise more funds for the cause!!!!! From now til the end of June, I am offering you a chance to win this poncho (size adult medium to large....not made from pattern so guessing a bit at the size - $90.00 value)!!! Who doesn't like homemade crafts.......for every donation of $20 or more to https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/HenriettaOlthoffMulder from now til June 30th, 2019, I am offering you a chance to win the poncho posted below in the comments section. This is open only for the donations made after June 14, 2019 (match day), but all donations, regardless of when in June 2019 they were made, will be entered into the draw for one of four prizes up for winning on July 1, 2019. Today I was out mostly on four wheels so didn't get in too much biking....but I got some awesome sponsors on board. You know who you are and thank you so much! I got in a short 4.1 kilometer ride after dinner, and then it started to rain. But, in that 4.1 kilometers, I did get another sponsor. I have to tell you, he looked like Anderson Cooper, but it wasn't him...lol. He was staring up into a tree, so I figured something was wrong, but he and the lady assured me that he was just coming home for dinner and they were checking their new tree to make sure there were no gypsy moth caterpillars there....and there were not. Everyone happy....they because there were no gypsy moth caterpillars, and I because I had another sponsor. And then it started to rain, so I had to cut the ride a bit short. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

I am working on the next challenge so I will NOT increase my kilometers because for the sponsor who will donate $1 for each kilometer over 200, it will be easy to calculate what to donate.....and for those who I have challenged to match this sponsor, just check my total kilometers and subtract the initial 200 kilometers, that's what I am hoping to get yet before the end of the month!

The day started as a work day which did not materialize so ran some errands and then by lunch time it was miserable and rainy😢. I waited til after dinner and then it was dry but much cooler already. Quickly I threw on some non matching pants with a long sleeved shirt and my Hero Jersey over top....nothing picture worthy...trust me...lol. But I got another 8.6 kilometres. Seven more to go and then I will have achieved my ride goal on all counts! But it’s still early in the game, so now will activate the second challenge. One dollar for every kilometer over 200....anyone care to match this sponsor to help even more kids!

Today was a warm day with a good east wind, so my ride ended up being in town on east/west streets with no hills. That got me 17.3 kilometers, and when I got home, I realized I was short by a few kilometers to reach 75% of my cycling goal, so I hopped on my bike and went up the road and back home to add another 5.1 kilometers. Now I have reached 75% of my riding goal, and surpassed my dollar goal.....but there are still sick kids suffering with cancer, so as long as that is the case, I will keep biking and hope you will keep sponsoring. The more money raised, the more kids can be helped.

Well folks, this is it!!!! You all have done your part to sponsor me in my Great Cycle Challenge 2019 ride! My initial goal was $3000, and that was reached early on in the fundraising efforts. I "upped" my goal to $4000 and then when that came and went, I decided to shoot for $5000. The more money we can raise, the more kids can be helped in their fight to survive, so the can live their lives. I promise not to increase my goal any further this year, but will accept any and all donations that still come my way during the month of June! .....and so tomorrow, I will begin doing my part.....I will cycle 200 or more kilometers during the month of June! You all came through for me, and now I plan to do my part! Hoping for safe biking travels, and to enjoy the scenery along the way. I will be having my STRAVA going during my rides, so will be posting pictures and a RELIVE video on my timeline on Facebook as often as possible so that you can enjoy the ride with me folks!

You can still be part of the fun by sponsoring me in my ride and help me reach my goal. I am almost there! but more importantly, we can help more and more kids to be able to live their lives, rather than having to fight to stay alive!

Still getting used to Strava as I haven’t used it for a while, so just want to say I ONLY had one ice cream cone....but it was really good!

As promised, I hope to promote some of the businesses who have sponsored me, during the month of May. Since I was out of town all day, I will start tomorrow, as it would hardly be fair to give a business only a few hours to be highlighted. I will start tomorrow to promote various businesses. Check it out tomorrow, and check back often and see who has helped me along the way to raise funds for kids fighting against cancer. And don't forget, it's not too late to DONATE if you have not already done so! Watch again tomorrow for a new update!

Sponsorship is going well....I am almost at my goal and now I want to find some other interesting things to put on my page, to keep the interest level high! Below is a picture of the area I will be biking in and around. Our little town has so much to offer and, is made up of a lot of great people and businesses who have helped me in my efforts to raise funds for the Great Cycle Challenge 2019. During the month of May, I hope to post some pictures and promote some of the people who have helped me along the way. Promoting the people who have helped me, promotes their business as well, so we can all help one another. Enjoy the pictures to be shared during the month of May.....come back often to check it out......and remember, it's not too late to donate! I still have a little ways to go, so still need the help of more good people! Thanks to all who have donated so far. The kids fighting to beat cancer appreciate all that is done to help them!

Today is a beautiful day and I should be out riding my bike but instead I went bowing with my team. Now bowling is finished for the season, so I want to try and get out every Wednesday afternoon to ride......weather permitting of course. Today, I again had to relinquish my first place spot in fundraising in Canada, this time to Gerry Seetner. But based on his page, he has a very important reason for riding so I wish him well. No matter who you sponsor, it's ALWAYS the "littles" fighting against cancer who end up being the winners.....so, sponsor me, sponsor someone else.....it's all good because we all bike for the same cause!

Hoping I can figure out how to post some of the rides on here but if not, check my timeline because I think I can post them there for sure.

This week I have decided that I will raise my target amount to $4000. I am getting so close and we still have a couple of months to go before the ride is over, so am hoping to raise another $642 before the end of June......can she do it you ask? With the help of so many of my friends and acquaintances and people I don't even know, I think that I will be able to achieve this goal. For now though, I want to thank all those who have already sponsored me, and those who have yet to do so, and everyone else who is following my page (I made it back up to number one for a while again) and wish you all A VERY HAPPY EASTER AS YOU CELEBRATE WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

So today I relinquished my first place spot to someone else but kudos to him for awesome fundraising! Many kids get helped by everyone doing their best to raise funds for kids fighting cancer! I know I have a few more people out there who have said they would sponsor me so, if you wanted to support me but have not done so yet, there is still lots of time to do so. If we all do a little, together we can accomplish a lot!

Since we still have two and a half months before the ride is completed, I have "upped" my goal to $3500, of which 84% has been accomplished. Our TEAM goal has also been increased to $4000 and we have reached 90% of our goal as a team. Check back often to see the updates as they are posted.

The Great Cycle Challenge 2019 has officially launched today. So excited to be able to get out and bike for such a great cause. Going outside shortly to get my bike cleaned up after a long winter in the garage. Got my cycling earrings on and getting excited about all of this. I am almost at my goal for fundraising, although I might "up" my goal if I reach it. Then all that's left is the fun part for me....the cycling. Keep on supporting for such a worthwhile cause! Thank you to all those who have already done so! You can follow my cycling by logging in to my page as it gets updated.

It's been a while since I updated my page. I am getting so much closer to my goal. In June I plan to bike at least 200 km in memory of my daughter Arlene, in order to raise $3000 for Sick Kids Foundation. This helps all the "littles" fighting against this horrible disease of cancer, and so, once again this year, with the help of all my sponsors, I want to do my part! Donations can be made by a couple of clicks on my site. Just click the DONATE button and fill in the required information. A receipt will be issued to you within a short period of time, directly from Great Cycle Challenge 2019. And not to worry folks, if I go over my goal, that's okay as well. Thanks to all my supporters thus far, and always appreciate any amount that you care to donate to this worthwhile cause.

Just a reminder that it is the "littles" fighting against cancer - they are the reason I ride. It's in Arlene's memory, but she will not benefit from the ride....pray that your "littles" will never need to make use of Sick Kids to fight for their life, but, in the event they do, that the help is there for them when they need it.

Want to know why I ride? For kids like Sophie!!!

Doctors discovered a softball-sized mass in little Sophie’s chest. She had developed T-cell lymphoma. Cancer. The young girl was suddenly in the fight of her life.

Sadly, aggressive chemotherapy failed to stop her cancer from spreading. The treatments impacted Sophie’s ability to walk, talk, use her hands and eat.

As little Sophie fought for her life, her parents spent countless hours by her daughter’s side in the hospital.

Sophie’s mom, Shelby, keeps constant watch by her daughter’s side. Shelbys only concern was Sophie and how she was being treated.

Her weakened body needed a stem cell transplant.

In this chaotic and difficult situation, the mother noticed a special nurse try so hard to go unnoticed. But Shelby was watching.

After snapping a photo while the nurse’s back was turned, Shelby posted the picture on Facebook page that the parents hade created to document Sophie’s fight against the disease.

“I see you,” Shelby wrote as she revealed everything she witnessed during her daughter’s care.

    Mom Shelby writes:

“I see you. I sit on this couch all day long and, I see you. You try so hard to be unnoticed by me and my child.

I see your face drop a little when she sees you and cries. You try so many ways to ease her fears and win her over. I see you hesitate to stick her or pull bandaids off. You say ‘No owies’ and ‘I’m sorry’ more times in one day than most people say ‘thank you’..

”I see all of those rubber bracelets on your arms and wrapped around your stethoscope, each one for a child that you’ve cared for and loved.

I see you stroke her little bald head and tuck her covers around her tightly. I see you holding the crying mom that got bad news. I see you trying to chart on the computer while holding the baby whose mom can’t-or won’t be at the hospital with her.”

“You put aside what’s happening in your life for 12 hours straight to care for very sick and something’s dying children. You go into each room with a smile no matter what’s happening in there. You see Sophie’s name on the schedule and come to check on us even when she isn’t your patient.

”You call the doctor, blood bank, and pharmacy as many times as necessary to get my child what she needs in a timely manner. You check on me as often as you check on her. You sit and listen to me ramble for 10 minutes even though your phone is buzzing and your to do list is a mile long.”

“I see you. We all see you. No amount of snack baskets or cards can fully express how appreciated you are. You are Jesus to us every single day. Our children wouldn’t get what they need without you. Moms like me wouldn’t feel sane or heard without you. You save our babies and we couldn’t do this without you.”

Shelby’s heartfelt message touched not only the nurses she wrote the post for, but also other parents who had similar experiences and also saw that the nurses are the backbone of the pediatric unit.

These nurses jobs are unimaginably difficult as they live through the worst times of any parent’s life, over and over again, every day.

Sadly, Sophie never got the chance to grow old and say ‘thank you’ to all the nurses who fought to keep her alive.

Her tiny body just couldn’t handle all the treatments and the aggressive cancer.

She again relapsed on December 22, 2017 and the family decided to withdraw treatment. Sophie was done.

Parents Shelby and Jonathan got 13 days of cuddling, reading, singing, watching movies, and loving until Sophie passed away in their arms on January 4, 2018.

I have just been in contact with Great Cycle Challenge 2019, and they are working on the website presently, so if you are trying to donate and having a problem, please try again later. They told me that the official launch would be in April so they need to get the site up with some changes they are making before that time, so periodically there could be issues in trying to donate. Please be patient as they sort this all out to have it all ready for April 2019. Rest assured, all your donations will be receipted! Thank you for any and all support you can give me in my ride for Sick Kids Foundation
