I'm Riding For

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child! This year’s ride is also being dedicated to Hunter Weston, who succumbed to the disease on May 26, 2021. Please help me to reach my goal of $15,000 or more this year. I’m trusting that I can count on your support again this year....will YOU be the one that pushes my numbers over the top? You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

28 May 2021

This year I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer again!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

My ride in 2020 surpassed my goal of $10,000, so this year my starting goal is $5000 and will be adjusted as I get closer to my goal. I continue to bike in memory of my daughter, but this year I am dedicating my ride to our local hero, Hunter Weston and riding and fundraising for all those still in the fight. I am hoping that you will continue to support me by sponsoring. YOU SPONSOR AND I WILL DO THE BIKING! Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Please check out my previous years stats in the sidebar on the left bottom of the page....YOU all helped me achieve that!

Your support will change little lives.

  • August 2, 2021 - Day 2
    3 Aug 2021

Today was more of a domestic day in the kitchen, making jams and sauces, but I did manage to get out for a short ride this afternoon. So far I have completed 54.1 of the 400 kilometers I am biking during the month of August. My fundraising is going well, although I am not at my goal yet....but there are still 29 more days for donations to come in. I am going to do my part, so I am hoping that I can count on the support of friends, family, and complete strangers to push my totals to the limit. Let's all work together to help these kids fighting cancer, be able to live their lives, instead of fighting just to be alive. Thank you to all those who have already donated, and to those who have not done so yet, but would like to, go to the link at the top of the page to be part of the sponsors who are helping to make a difference.

    1 Aug 2021

My planned ride to Woodstock did not happen yet, as the weather did not look promising. So I opted for a shorter ride this morning....was out before breakfast already and got in 14.3 kms so it is a start. If the weather looks okay for this afternoon, I might still make it to Woodstock. I need to check the radar to make sure I can do it without getting caught in a thunderstorm!

Tomorrow it all begins for real. A good night's rest and hopefully, get my first ride in tomorrow. Need the weather to cooperate though, as I don't start out if it is already raining. Hoping for a window of opportunity that I can get a good ride in and make a dent on my 400 kilometers for the month. I have not reached my $$$ goal yet, so I am asking, if you feel so inclined, to help me get there at some point during the month of August.

Today the FEDEX people got it wrong again. Postal codes must not mean anything, and north and south seem to be the same to them. Post Office often makes the same mistake.....lol! So off on a quick after dinner ride to deliver the FEDEX parcel to the opposite end of town. Chain came off the bike and the seat ended up being loose.....need to carry a few tools with me I guess. The home owner came home and helped me get it back on though, so all is good!

Sunday evening was just a short ride to deliver a pot of "jam". Then back home again. A nice little resting stop part way up the hill!

  • July 23, 2021 Tribute Ride for Arlene and Hunter and all the others
    24 Jul 2021

Tonight I went out for my TRIBUTE RIDE and touched base with a couple more people for support and raising awareness for the cause! Today was a very positive day and the evening was great for riding.....not too hot and not much wind......I think I am liking evening rides much more than the afternoon in the hot sun rides. Also, got gifted a beautiful bird house that is up for auction (starting at $100) and some peaches that look like they could make their way into a jam that would be for sale as well!

I went out for a quick little evening ride. Along my travels I saw this really cool "little library" which was not there before. Got to chat with the homeowner about it....and the fire in the fire pit he was starting....and then about Great Cycle Challenge and what I was doing. Lovely conversation with the gentleman, and another donation along the way!

A short ride this afternoon as the sun was out. Not too far but chatted with a few more people about my GCC ride.
