I'm Riding For

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against stage IV colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child and so I ride to support kids who are fighting this horrible disease of cancer, but in Arlene’s memory. Please help me to reach my goal of $3000 this year. You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Today was a nice day to be out and about...so I got reacquainted with my bike after a long winter and it felt awesome being out there again! First ride of the season....14.1 kms so not bad for a first ride. Let the training begin! Hoping I can figure out how to post some of the rides on here but if not, check my timeline because I think I can post them there for sure.

This week I have decided that I will raise my target amount to $4000. I am getting so close and we still have a couple of months to go before the ride is over, so am hoping to raise another $642 before the end of June......can she do it you ask? With the help of so many of my friends and acquaintances and people I don't even know, I think that I will be able to achieve this goal. For now though, I want to thank all those who have already sponsored me, and those who have yet to do so, and everyone else who is following my page (I made it back up to number one for a while again) and wish you all A VERY HAPPY EASTER AS YOU CELEBRATE WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

So today I relinquished my first place spot to someone else but kudos to him for awesome fundraising! Many kids get helped by everyone doing their best to raise funds for kids fighting cancer! I know I have a few more people out there who have said they would sponsor me so, if you wanted to support me but have not done so yet, there is still lots of time to do so. If we all do a little, together we can accomplish a lot!

Thanks to my generous sponsors, today I reached the first goal I had set for myself. I will continue to fundraise as long as the ride lasts, although I suspect the bulk of my sponsors have checked in and sponsored already.....but surprise me folks......my goal is $3500 now so lots of room to help more kids yet!

There isn't much news to report at this time.....fundraising is going well. Since we still have two and a half months before the ride is completed, I have "upped" my goal to $3500, of which 84% has been accomplished. Our TEAM goal has also been increased to $4000 and we have reached 90% of our goal as a team. Check back often to see the updates as they are posted.

The Great Cycle Challenge 2019 has officially launched today. So excited to be able to get out and bike for such a great cause. Going outside shortly to get my bike cleaned up after a long winter in the garage. Got my cycling earrings on and getting excited about all of this. I am almost at my goal for fundraising, although I might "up" my goal if I reach it. Then all that's left is the fun part for me....the cycling. Keep on supporting for such a worthwhile cause! Thank you to all those who have already done so! You can follow my cycling by logging in to my page as it gets updated.

It's been a while since I updated my page. I am getting so much closer to my goal. In June I plan to bike at least 200 km in memory of my daughter Arlene, in order to raise $3000 for Sick Kids Foundation. This helps all the "littles" fighting against this horrible disease of cancer, and so, once again this year, with the help of all my sponsors, I want to do my part! Donations can be made by a couple of clicks on my site. Just click the DONATE button and fill in the required information. A receipt will be issued to you within a short period of time, directly from Great Cycle Challenge 2019. And not to worry folks, if I go over my goal, that's okay as well. Thanks to all my supporters thus far, and always appreciate any amount that you care to donate to this worthwhile cause.

Support me in my bike ride to raise funds for Sick Kids Foundation, for your chance at one of four prizes to be drawn on July 1, 2019. I plan to bike 200 kilometers in the month of June, with the hopes of raising $3,000.00 to help in the fight against childhood cancer.

Just a reminder that it is the "littles" fighting against cancer - they are the reason I ride. It's in Arlene's memory, but she will not benefit from the ride....pray that your "littles" will never need to make use of Sick Kids to fight for their life, but, in the event they do, that the help is there for them when they need it.

I am humbled by the awesome support I have received so far in my upcoming ride for Sick Kids Foundation, which raises funds to help kids fighting cancer. I know I won't get to stay at number #1 in Country and the Province, but I feel honoured to get such good support from my friends, family, and even people who I do not know. Thank you so much for helping me in this endeavour!

Want to know why I ride? For kids like Sophie!!!

Doctors discovered a softball-sized mass in little Sophie’s chest. She had developed T-cell lymphoma. Cancer. The young girl was suddenly in the fight of her life.

Sadly, aggressive chemotherapy failed to stop her cancer from spreading. The treatments impacted Sophie’s ability to walk, talk, use her hands and eat.

As little Sophie fought for her life, her parents spent countless hours by her daughter’s side in the hospital.

Sophie’s mom, Shelby, keeps constant watch by her daughter’s side. Shelbys only concern was Sophie and how she was being treated.

Her weakened body needed a stem cell transplant.

In this chaotic and difficult situation, the mother noticed a special nurse try so hard to go unnoticed. But Shelby was watching.

After snapping a photo while the nurse’s back was turned, Shelby posted the picture on Facebook page that the parents hade created to document Sophie’s fight against the disease.

“I see you,” Shelby wrote as she revealed everything she witnessed during her daughter’s care.

    Mom Shelby writes:

“I see you. I sit on this couch all day long and, I see you. You try so hard to be unnoticed by me and my child.

I see your face drop a little when she sees you and cries. You try so many ways to ease her fears and win her over. I see you hesitate to stick her or pull bandaids off. You say ‘No owies’ and ‘I’m sorry’ more times in one day than most people say ‘thank you’..

”I see all of those rubber bracelets on your arms and wrapped around your stethoscope, each one for a child that you’ve cared for and loved.

I see you stroke her little bald head and tuck her covers around her tightly. I see you holding the crying mom that got bad news. I see you trying to chart on the computer while holding the baby whose mom can’t-or won’t be at the hospital with her.”

“You put aside what’s happening in your life for 12 hours straight to care for very sick and something’s dying children. You go into each room with a smile no matter what’s happening in there. You see Sophie’s name on the schedule and come to check on us even when she isn’t your patient.

”You call the doctor, blood bank, and pharmacy as many times as necessary to get my child what she needs in a timely manner. You check on me as often as you check on her. You sit and listen to me ramble for 10 minutes even though your phone is buzzing and your to do list is a mile long.”

“I see you. We all see you. No amount of snack baskets or cards can fully express how appreciated you are. You are Jesus to us every single day. Our children wouldn’t get what they need without you. Moms like me wouldn’t feel sane or heard without you. You save our babies and we couldn’t do this without you.”

Shelby’s heartfelt message touched not only the nurses she wrote the post for, but also other parents who had similar experiences and also saw that the nurses are the backbone of the pediatric unit.

These nurses jobs are unimaginably difficult as they live through the worst times of any parent’s life, over and over again, every day.

Sadly, Sophie never got the chance to grow old and say ‘thank you’ to all the nurses who fought to keep her alive.

Her tiny body just couldn’t handle all the treatments and the aggressive cancer.

She again relapsed on December 22, 2017 and the family decided to withdraw treatment. Sophie was done.

Parents Shelby and Jonathan got 13 days of cuddling, reading, singing, watching movies, and loving until Sophie passed away in their arms on January 4, 2018.

I have just been in contact with Great Cycle Challenge 2019, and they are working on the website presently, so if you are trying to donate and having a problem, please try again later. They told me that the official launch would be in April so they need to get the site up with some changes they are making before that time, so periodically there could be issues in trying to donate. Please be patient as they sort this all out to have it all ready for April 2019. Rest assured, all your donations will be receipted! Thank you for any and all support you can give me in my ride for Sick Kids Foundation

So I am going to try something a bit different this year. I am hoping to do fundraising earlier this year (so sponsors can already do so now on the site) so that I can focus more on riding my bike come summer. Still working on the draws for this year, but it should be fun.....I think there will be three draws this year and soon I will be able to post pictures for you.....although one will be a total surprise because it's already wrapped (over $50 value though)....lol!
