I'm Riding For

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against stage IV colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child and so I ride to support kids who are fighting this horrible disease of cancer, but in Arlene’s memory. Please help me to reach my goal of $8500 this year. I’m trusting that I can count on your support again this year....will YOU be the one that pushes my numbers over the top? You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

4 Aug 2020

This August I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

This years ride is again in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight

in a battle against cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child, so I ride to support kids who are fighting this horrible disease of cancer, but in Arlene’s memory. In my ride in 2019 I surpassed my goal of $5000, so this year I am setting my goal at $5000 to start. There are still kids who have not gotten to go home, so I will continue to bike, and I am hoping that you will continue to support me by sponsoring. YOU SPONSOR AND I WILL DO THE BIKING! Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • September 8, 2020 - prizes awarded
    8 Sep 2020

This will be to make it easier for all those who contributed to my ride this year, to follow who the winners in the draw have been. The prizes have been distributed now, and the winner of the Thamesford Pizza coupon was Howard Ball from Woodstock, Ontario. The winners of the other four prizes were (in no particular order) Turner's Farm Market, Mike McKirdy, Ellyn Sinke, and Jenny Mansfield! Congratulations to the winners, and a huge THANK YOU to all who supported me this year. Together we were able to help make a difference in the lives of the kids still fighting the fight.

My plan is to ride again next year, so be watching for the beginning of the fundraising sometime in May I suspect....depending on whether the ride happens in June or August in 2021.

This marks the official end of my rides for this year. I will still bike, but now the pressure to "gettr done"no longer exists! With the help of so many supporters, I was able to accomplish much more than I ever dreamed possible. With television news coverage, and in the local newspaper a couple of times, it has been a fantastic experience once again. I have met more fellow GCC riders again this year, probably highlighted by our group ride and "swim" with Zach, Lezli, Dianne and Brian on August 18th. I hope to be back next year, so until then, stay safe everyone, be kind.....AND WATCH OUT FOR BIKE RIDERS PLEASE!

Today I surpassed all my goals in GCC2020! I have now biked 505 kilometres (400 of them with my husband riding with me....thanks for your continued support dear), and raised more than double what I set as my initial goal for fundraising this year. To say it has been a great experience to be a part of GCC this year, would be an understatement. The support of each and every one of you is so very much appreciated, so THANK YOU all very much for your donations and words of encouragement.

To bike or not to bike? Will it rain or not? And then the wind!!!!! Okay so it rained - what has fallen won’t fall again! Yeah the wind was certainly there, but it was doable for sure. Picked up another donation on the ride and had company there and back, so happy we made the decision to go!

  • August 26, 2020 - ride dedicated to Lori Neville
    26 Aug 2020

Today's ride was a very special one, as I and many of the GCC2020 riders from across the country, were riding to honour Lori Neville, one of our fellow cyclers from Wyoming, who tragically lost her life in an accident this past weekend. A somber ride as we remember how fragile this life is for all of us.....not just the kids fighting cancer, but all who cycle for the cause, as well as all who breathe the air while here on planet earth. It was my honour to ride in Lori's honour this morning.

Tonight I went out by myself because I just wanted to tour around in the subdivisions, up and down a bunch of streets. The ride to the highway and back gets boring after a while, but when my riding partner likes the straight rides, it's what we usually do. But tonight I went on my own, so did my own thing and got a few more kilometers in the books.

In light of my blog from August 22, 2020, I want to add to what I previously wrote. While, as a senior, I won't try to understand the logic, all the tire tracks on the road not to far from my home, were not put there by wreckless young drivers, but rather, as a tribute to one of their own, who tragically lost his life at that very spot on the evening of August 17, 2020. When one makes an assumption, it can be incorrect, and I just want to acknowledge that here on my blog. RIP Greg Coordes

While I have finished my ride goal, I will continue to do some rides this last week while GCC winds down for another year. Wednesday's ride will be to honour and add to Lori Neville's ride. Lori is the cyclist who was struck by a vehicle and died, on Saturday morning. I also still be taking donations til the end of the month, although Great Cycle Challenge has sent out an email stating that donations can be made until the end of September, so let's see if we can finish up with an awesome finish for GCC2020 folks!

Before, I was only able to witness the results of how they drive, tonight we saw a young driver in action! On another note, I have ridden the kilometers I committed to riding, while so many sponsors have come through for me, and put me way over my initial goal.....so thank you one and all. With nine more days to ride and collect, I will watch to see what happens next.

    21 Aug 2020

This morning's ride took us 30.6 kilometres to deliver a tax receipt to a sponsor. What a beautiful morning to ride....and by tomorrow I hope to have completed my 400 kilometres, and YOU my sponsors, have done fantastic in supporting me with your dollars to raise so much money for childhood cancer. After my 400 kilometers, my individual goals will have been met, but the kids are still fighting for their survival. So after my 400 kilometers, they are all bonus kilometers that I am hoping will generate bonus money raised. You can do this by sponsoring me for $.25 per kilometer over the 400 that I bike in the last nine days of the challenge.

I missed posting for the 18th of August. It was such a great day - cycling with four of my Great Cycle Challenge friends, who drove down from GTA and Port Bruce. It was such a fun day, but at the end of it, I was mentally exhausted from reading and checking all the reactions to all the great pictures taken by Zach (our official photographer). Also the great article in the Sentinel Review, and the refreshing dip in the pool after our ride, as well as the fantastic pizza from Thamesford Pizza (everyone raved about it). A fun time socializing afterwards and that brought the day to an end. Such a fun time for us all.....make the best of friends through GCC!

Today looks like it's a "wash" for riding as well. Sorry folks, I do not start out in the rain to ride kilometres. But I have every intention of doing my 400 kms before the end of the month. If there is a window of opportunity later this afternoon, I will try to get out for a short ride yet. Otherwise, it's a few more rides during the week to play catch up.

Rain at 6 a.m. the weatherman said.....rain at 8 a.m. also. So I decided today would be a "down" day from biking and I would clear away some dust bunnies. Well, 6 a.m. and no rain, but the mindset was not to bike so went back to sleep. Then got to looking into bullhorns for my bike....yes I have bullhorns now after a quick trip to Woodstock CTC. Then a trip into town to do a few errands. Probably the highlight of my day was when I got someone on the street to sponsor me...and then an elderly man on a scooter stopped to talk to him and I and tell me that he thought it was great what I was doing. Didn't know the man at all, but it felt good that he recognized me in my jersey, and told me he was following my story....love that raising funds for kids cancer is getting recognition...so thank you my friend for your kind words! Then a few more stops and sponsor, and home for dinner. Well folks, still no rain, so a quick short ride to the highway and back for a few kilometres......and the dust bunnies get to live another day.....lol!

Got caught a bit in the rain so headed home again. But will keep adding up the kilometers. No pictures today as I just wanted to ride and get kilometers.

Tomorrow looks like lots of rain, so I went for a short ride just before dinner. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to find a window of "dry" to get out for a ride even if it is just a short one.

    1 Aug 2020

I set out this morning to do the Cami Loop for my first ride. First time this season to do this. Hubby came along for the ride as well. It all went well with a few stops along the way. Then we met up (by chance) with Sean Irvine from CTV London. He was in town covering a sad story. Another quick stop at a sponsor's establishment for a minor adjustment on the saddle, and then headed back home.

    31 Jul 2020

I got out earlier this morning before it got too hot, and did a short training ride. Will relax now before it all starts for real tomorrow!!! Have a route planned for tomorrow so will see how it goes. Got a few cool pictures along the ride this morning and just want to put in a plug for a great place to purchase your corn picked fresh daily. Best corn we have tasted! Check them out at Marsha Litt's corn stand on County Road 31 about 1 mile north of Ingersoll.

Ingersoll woman raising thousands in Great Cycle Challenge

An Ingersoll woman will set out to cycle more than 400 kilometres and raise thousands of dollars for Sick Kids Hospital this August in memory of her own daughter who died of cancer.

An Ingersoll woman will set out to cycle more than 400 kilometres – and raise thousands of dollars – for Sick Kids Hospital this August in memory of her own daughter who died of cancer.

Henrietta Mulder, 72, is participating this year for the fourth time in the Great Cycle Challenge to benefit Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital. She’s riding in memory of her daughter, Arlene, who died in 2018 at the age of 49.

“She wasn’t a child, but she was still my child,” said Mulder of her reason behind the fundraising ride.

This is the fourth year Mulder has participated in the challenge, and has set her most ambitious goals yet: 400 kilometres cycled over the court of the month and $6,500 raised.

Originally, she set out to raise $5,000, but met the goal easily and early, and has now raised $5,755 of her updated goal. Mulder has done other things, such as make berry jam to sell, to supplement her fundraising efforts.

    STORY CONTINUES BELOW

In the years she’s been participating, Mulder has raised more than $16,000 and biked nearly 1,000 kilometres, not including her many training rides. She does many of those rides around Ingersoll and Oxford County.

In 2017, Mulder enrolled in the challenge for the first time to get active and get cycling at a friend’s invitation. The next year, her daughter had been diagnosed with cancer and, by the third year she participated, her daughter had died. Now, nearly two years after her daughter’s death, she rides in Arlene’s memory.

“She passed much too young and, in order to give some purpose to that happening, I want to help other kids,” Mulder said. “I keep doing it as long as I can.”

Now in its fifth year, the ride benefits Sick Kids Hospital, with funds going to the hospital foundation for the care, treatment and research of cancer.

Mulder logs her rides and people can follow along with her progress through the Great Cycle Challenge website, where she posts photos and routes from her training rides. She hopes this year to do a joint ride with a friend from Toronto who rides a unicycle.

And while it’s about raising money for a good cause, Mulder said she loves the community and competition around the rides – she figures she’s leading fundraising in her age category, and likes to see the progress of the other participants.

“Being you’re on a bike, there’s so much beauty to see that when you’re in a car, you’re driving by … you don’t see it,” Mulder said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Mulder was ninth in Canada and fourth in Ontario for the challenge. Find Mulder’s progress and fundraising page here at greatcyclechallenge.ca under “Henrietta Olthoff Mulder.” The challenge runs through the month of August beginning Saturday

  • July 24, 2020 ride to London and ......well almost made it back!
    25 Jul 2020

My friend and I set off at 9:15 a.m. this morning (note to self.....start earlier) and headed out to reach a destination I have always meant to bike (London, Ontario). The ride there went really well and we rested on the lawn of some company and watched the traffic at the corner of Gore Road and Veteran's Memorial Parkway for a while. Then the return trip seemed a bit more challenging, so made it as far as the Thamesford cutoff and headed up towards the Tim Horton's. At that time, the ride kind of fell apart and I called for backup to get me home again. All in All it was almost 40 kilometers though, so my longest ride this year so far.....and in the heat of the day. Won't try that again I guess!

A short ride late in the afternoon to do some berry picking. Hoping to make some jam/Jellies and sell them for my fundraiser this year. Not sure how many jars I will have available at this point, but will sell until they are gone.

Hoping to start training rides on my new bike soon! The knee is healing and the colours in my face are shifting. I am getting anxious to do a ride on the new wheels. Glad that the heat is happening while I am off the bike for a bit. I hope that next week the temperatures will be a bit more tolerable!

No riding for a few more days, but that’s no reason to not continue fundraising!

After my spill on Sunday, the colour of the eye is changing......from my side it looks great! The knee is healing up nicely and hopefully, soon the bruise and swelling on the thigh will subside as well!

On a great note though, I got new wheels today.....well, pickup is tomorrow morning. So exciting and now I want to get out there and ride again!

So thankful, that even during Covid 19, there are still many generous people who believe in the cause and are willing to support my ride. Had a few really nice conversations with some very nice people tonight!

It's going to be a hot day today and company's a'coming, so not sure about a ride today....apparently I have been appointed the designated swimmer with an almost three year old...lol

So let's check out your odds in the lotteries......sponsor me right now, and your odds of winning a prize are 1 in 60...and you get to help make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer. Those are much better odds than other lotteries, so continue to support Sick Kids Foundation, and hopefully MY efforts to raise $5000 for the cause. You sponsor, and I will do the biking....400 kilometers in the month of August!

    Can I count on YOU?

This morning I saw that the unicycle man had been up since 5:30 a.m. to do a ride before working the train from Windsor back to Toronto. I touched base with Zach, and told him I would be at the train station in Ingersoll with my jersey on, and wave to him as he went by. The train did not stop but he caught a short video clip while they were going by and sent it to me. While waiting for the train, I chatted with someone who was all about taking pictures of trains, and also part of Oxford Trails and shared some of the local trails with me. We chatted until the train came by and he promised to send me the picture he took of me on my bike sporting the GCC jersey. Also said he would try to promote what I am trying to do to raise funds (along with many other riders across the country). The afternoon was a bit more biking and fundraising and so it has been a great day once again!

So the last few days have been extremely hot, making biking for this senior much more difficult....and so it really did not happen....But we are heading into a few cooler days again, so will get out there to do some more training rides before the big event in August. We can only hope for some cool days in August so I can get my 400 kilometers in.....but more importantly, that I will be able to reach my goal of $5000.00 this year. Won't you please help me to do that?! You don't have to do the biking....leave that to me, as long as you come alongside me with your support! Thanks so much to all my faithful followers and supporters, and any others who want to jump on board this year for the first time!

Ugh....so I have tried to use the link from GCC, with a personal update, to pm my fb friends.....but alas, it doesn't seem to be working the way I wanted it to, SO HERE IS THE INFORMATION YOU NEED, if you are willing to support me in my ride to raise funds for Childhood Cancer at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

To all my previous sponsors and friends of Great Cycle Challenge:

I have, once again, signed up for GCC, and am trusting, that even in these trying times, I will be able to count on the support of many. I know we are all struggling through these days, but it's just a taste of what the kids fighting cancer go through every day......we all want to stay safe and alive, and so do they.

To read more about my previous rides and more reasons of why I ride, please check out the link below.

If you choose to support me (fundraising will be much more difficult this year because of the social distancing), support can be given directly online by clicking on the link below:

    https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/HenriettaOlthoffMulder

Thank you for taking the time to check out the link, and thank you to all who are able to help me help the kids!

    Stay safe and stay well!

Today was a gorgeous day out....lots of sunshine, no rain, a bit of wind, and lots of time, as we are all being encouraged to distance ourselves from others because of Covid-19. So pump up the tires, dust off the bike, and go for my first ride of the season. It felt so good to get out there this early in the year. Because of the current health threat around the world, Great Cycle Challenge has postponed GCC2020 to August. This allows for more time for practice rides.....but also poses more difficult challenges in fundraising this year. I am hoping I can count on many of my sponsors from previous years, as I try to reach a goal of $5000 this year. I will do the biking (400 kms in the month of August) and all I ask of you, is that you would continue with the generous sponsoring of past years. Stay safe everyone!
