I'm Riding For

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

Arlene Mulder Papaioannou

This years ride is in memory of my daughter Arlene, who lost her fight in a battle against colon cancer in October 2018💔! While she was no longer a child, she was MY child! This year’s ride is also being dedicated to Hunter Weston, who succumbed to the disease on May 26, 2021. Please help me to reach my goal of $15,000 or more this year. I’m trusting that I can count on your support again this year....will YOU be the one that pushes my numbers over the top? You sponsor and I will do the biking!

My Story

28 May 2021

This year I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer again!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

My ride in 2020 surpassed my goal of $10,000, so this year my starting goal is $5000 and will be adjusted as I get closer to my goal. I continue to bike in memory of my daughter, but this year I am dedicating my ride to our local hero, Hunter Weston and riding and fundraising for all those still in the fight. I am hoping that you will continue to support me by sponsoring. YOU SPONSOR AND I WILL DO THE BIKING! Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Please check out my previous years stats in the sidebar on the left bottom of the page....YOU all helped me achieve that!

Your support will change little lives.

    1 Sep 2021

One last ride for GCC 2021. This has been a fantastic year for riding and fundraising.....some days were too hot, some too wet. On those days I tried to get out earlier in the day or after dinner when things cooled down a bit. Fundraising went extremely well this year.....just when you hit a plateau and wonder whether you will achieve your goal, unexpected donations come from donors you didn't even know. To ALL of you, whether your donation was large or small, I am totally indebted to you for helping me reach my goals. While my portion of the $9,000,000 raised so far, is not that large, I trust that it will help make the difference in the kids fighting cancer.

And now it's time to start brainstorming for next year!!!

Thank you to one and all.....have a wonderful rest of the year, stay safe, and look forward to connecting with many of you again in the spring!

Well, the weather is cooperating a bit more and so it was easier to get out and put in a few more kilometers this morning. While I have already finished my 400 kilometers, since I was not at my dollar goal yet, I decided to continue to bike, in hopes of making that goal a reality as well! And then during the day, I received a couple of donations, and then tonight a wonderful sponsor came through and put me over the top! I am thrilled beyond measure, with the phenomenal support I have received this year, and with the help of ALL OF YOU, regardless the size of your donation, we will make a difference in the lives of the kids fighting cancer. They should be living normal kid lives, not stuck in a hospital receiving treatments, and counting beads for all the procedures they have to endure!

It was a hot afternoon today so I only went for a short ride…..to see where the music was coming from and make a presence….lol. Watched the end of a ball game….poor girls playing 3 games back to back in the heat!🥵Unsuccessful, but on a good note, earlier I got to talk to someone at the service station and got another donation! Yay for making connections, one person at a time!

Today was a special day....got to do an interview with Sean Irvine from CTV London. I was thrilled when he messaged on Tuesday to inquire about doing an interview again this year. After a quick trip up to the Bruce Peninsula, to visit family as well as get a ride in with a fellow GCC rider, I was able to get my 100 kilometers done in beautiful surroundings. When I think of small town, and how peaceful it is, I begin to realize how much more peaceful it is the further one goes north. It was a short trip but so relaxing and a great place to bike along the shoreline of Lake Huron. The trip was short, but oh so worth it to get away finally....and north of Southampton escaped the heat warnings they had in Southwestern Ontario, so it was a good place to be for a couple of days.

After a couple of days of no biking, I got out for a nice ride today with Dianne Trask. We cycled 18.3 km along the shores of Lake Huron fro Howdenvale to the Whiskey Harbour Road and back. Biking with good company is always fun, so, was happy Dianne took the time to come up from Port Elgin. We also met another GCC rider, Phillip Clark. We stopped and chatted for a while before continuing on our way. We are now back home and I have reached my kilometer goal, and a bit beyond. I still have 5 more days to ride, so I am hoping that in those 5 days, I will also gather a few more donations to get me to my dollar goal to help the kids fighting cancer.

Today I received an email from GCC, that it had been 8 months since a little warrior from last year, Alex, decided that he was no longer able to take any more treatments and opted to stop with any further treatments. Imagine being eight years old and having to make such a decision!!!! This should NOT be, and so we continue to fundraise for and raise awareness of, childhood cancer. Let's finish this month strong to help as many kids as possible. YOU CAN DO IT!
