Kolton Byerley
Kolton is a person who likes to challenge himself, this is a side of his personality that has helped him through his cancer diagnosis. On May 4th, 2022 Kolton’s life changed in a dramatic way. He went into Alberta Children's Hospital suffering from a bad headache, he had been suffering with headaches for a couple of months. This headache was much worse, making him nauseous and affecting his eyes. That was the day we learned that Kolton had a brain tumour the size of a golf ball in his brain. An emergency surgery was booked for the following day, where his tumour was successfully removed. We waited for weeks but it felt much longer to learn the diagnosis of the kind of tumour we would be dealing with. We learned that he had Medulloblastoma group 4, words no parent ever wants to hear associated with their child,he had Radiation in July 2022 then Chemotherapy started in September 2022. This last school year not only did he pass grade 9 but he also finished chemotherapy treatment in January 2023, just after this 14th birthday. That is a big victory, he is now being monitored by his Oncology team to make sure he remains cancer free. Kolton’s determination allows him to push forward. He wants to go camping now that it is summer and it is one of his favourite pastimes. He would like to get back in the water, which he could not do when he was going through treatment because of medical devices in his body. Kolton continues to enjoy baking and looks forward to taking food class in High School next year. He has been doing summer school for gym as he is still not ready for all aspects of school. However the summer school gym has been getting him out and playing ball, riding his bike, disc golf, paddle boarding, golf and much more. It is nice to see him being more active as he is a mover. Kolton would like to get a job now that he is older, he will start working for his parents at Yooneek Books and hopes to get something else after he is done with summer school.
My Story
Hey! Our names are Kolten and Keegan we are 6 & 4 years old and This August, we are taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.
