My Story

I’m Lily, and I was diagnosed with a glioblastoma when I was 19. Strangely enough, my story starts with my puppy, Minnie. One day, she tangled her leash around my legs, spotted a squirrel and sent me flying in front of my old elementary school during recess. I hobbled home, assuming I had only hurt my ankle. It was broken, but something else was wrong too. My right hand was becoming weak and numb. Because Minnie was teething, I convinced myself she had bitten me too hard. Then I dropped my Jo Malone candle and watched it shatter. That was when I knew my hand wasn’t working. At the ER, I was initially diagnosed with MS and spent Christmas receiving plasma treatments that changed nothing. After another MRI, a surgeon entered my room on January 11 and told me the truth: I had glioblastoma. He was emotionally ice cold, but I’ll give him credit—he didn’t leave me looking like the Crypt Keeper after surgery. Treatment changed everything. I lost my hair, steroids changed my body, and I barely recognized myself. It felt like someone had shaken my life like a snow globe and returned it with every piece out of place. There were moments when I wanted to give up, but I grew up surrounded by strong women. My three sisters supported me through the ugliest parts, while my mom emailed neurosurgeons around the world. For a long time, I thought cancer had taken away the girl I used to be. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t supposed to become her again. I had to discover who Lily was now.
