Aria

Aria and her mom spent months at home with very few visitors, when she was on treatment for stage 3 hepatoblastoma — a rare liver cancer. She was 14 months old, and her mom being a single parent working full-time, was blessed to be able to take a leave of absence from teaching. Aria endured countless blood transfusions, months of chemotherapy, and an eight-hour surgery to remove the tumor and 70 percent of her liver. The treatments weakened her immune system, so Aria's mother got into a daily routine of disinfecting the entire home. Their only outings were scheduled admissions for chemotherapy and appointments at the hospital. Fast forward to the COVID-19 crisis and the feeling is all too familiar. Aria’s immune system is still fragile. She is currently fighting an atypical presentation of mononucleosis — a rare case where the mono attacks the liver. The doctor fears her liver wouldn’t take it if she were to become infected by COVID-19. These kids deserve to live happily. Please help.

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

I feel that it is extremely cumbersome to manage Cancer as an adult, and for a wide variety of reasons, I have tremendous respect for the parents who have to go through this traumatic experience of watching their kid endure this excruciating pain.

As I was asked to choose a friend/Family Member, I decided to search online and I found Aria's story which helped me realize how difficult it must be for the family to cope up with all this.
