My Story

6 Aug 2024

This August, Lyle and I thought we'd take part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer.

Lyle bikes to work fairly often, 18km one way, and we like to do bike rides on the weekends, so we thought why not make our kms count and support this very worthy cause, helping the SickKids Foundation to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Why? Because right now, over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. Kids should be living their lives, not fighting for them.

If you feel you'd like to help us, we thank you for making a donation to give these children the brighter futures they deserve. Thanks so much!

My Challenge

  • Mississauga - Port Credit (21.2 km x 2 = 42.4 km)
    6 Sep 2024

After dropping my aunt off at Toronto airport on Tuesday, Sept 3, we started at Marie Curtis West Beach Park in Mississauga, biking along the Waterfront Trail to Port Credit Lighthouse

We had to take a detour bake to Lakeshore Road, as they are revamping the wastewater plant, and there's also a Lakeview mega condo village being built.

To draw attention to promote this huge project, there was a sunflower field planted in front which drew person back to the geodesic dome which was the art place inside, with signs depicting the future development which you could see was being carried out.

When we left there, we were directed back to Lakeshore so we stopped at Tim Hortons and then resumed the waterfront Trail going through many a park and passing marinas and yacht clubs, the Mississauga Majors ball diamond, as well as where Beehive Cornstarch was produced. Quite interesting.

We got to Port Credit and went over to lighthouse to check it out, Then went across the road to the train bridge. At this point it was time for supper so we stopped at The Brogue Irish Pub which has been in business for 28 years! Prices are very reasonable and the menu was excellent. On the corner of Hwy 10 Hurontario St which goes straight up to Collingwood.

Port Credit is a foodie paradise with many restaurants of all ethnicities lining the main street.

After we ate, we biked back to the car, getting there just before dark.

    A very interesting afternoon!

GCC kept our accounts open for a bit in case people didn't get their kms in due to wet weather during August, so we took advantage of this opportunity for our last bike ride of this challenge for this year.

  • Sarnia to Brights Grove with Friends
    26 Aug 2024

We started on the Howard Watson Trail at Modeland Rd and Cathcart Blvd in Sarnia, leisurely riding on this hot day on the shady path to where You can Branch off and go into Mike Weir Park. We meandered through the park and on to the bike path that goes along Lake Huron. So scenic with its shades of blue and Ski-Doos roaring about, people on the beaches, families spending time together, people doing stand-up paddleboarding, bigger boats zipping along. Lots of people playing in the water today!

We carried on to St. John's in the wilderness Church where we discovered a beehive! Reading library, old cemetery. We bite through the little back streets over to Gladys Street and then went back up only the main road and stopped to refuel at Skeeter Barlow's for deliciousness.

Then we started on our return trip back to our starting point, seeing many a chipmunk and squirrel on the HWT.

A lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon with good friends!

  • Grand Bend Ride
    18 Aug 2024

We started our ride from Lambton Heritage Museum, which is free admission this year until December 31st because of Lambton's 150th anniversary

And, they have renovated this Museum, and it's completely different than before! The room to the left of the entrance is filled with new exhibits, white backgrounds, bright lights, and lots of interesting local information highlighting the families and the lifestyles of the people who have settled Lambton along with his industries and pastimes. The room to the right of the reception area is the collections room and would take a day to go through stuff by itself! Along with the buildings out in the yard behind. Lots to look at!

So we left the museum with rain in the air, we got spat on a bit but the rain stopped as we pedalled along, When we got into Grand Bend we went right down to the beach and spent some time there where it was extremely windy and watched the waves crashing against the lighthouse. We left the beach area and pedaled back up along the main Street and took some side streets back behind, and then we got back onto 21 and went to Denny's for supper. They serve Thai food there too and have quite an assortment!

Once we had refueled we biked back to the museum. This time using the paved bike path right on the side of the highway which was smoother.

  • THANK YOU!!
    16 Aug 2024

We want to thank our sponsors who have helped us raise $1,000 for SickKids Hospital already, and it's just August 16!!

We're going to keep this open for the rest of the month, should anyone feel like you'd like to contribute to this worthy cause, while we get the rest of our kms ridden.

And if it happens to reach $2,500, Lyle gets the SuperHero Jersey, because I am so proud of him and thankful to God for how he still bikes to work and back in the day, plays volleyball and baseball like he does after having a lobectomy (one of the lobes of his right lung removed) 2 years ago on Sept 12, And he's still doing his sports.

    Thanks, friends! <3

  • Ride #2 Elmira to Wallenstein. 19 km x2 = 38 km
    12 Aug 2024

We dropped Josh off in Waterloo on Sunday after lunch to catch a ride back to Ottawa, after having a great weekend with him seeing family and friends .

We drove up to Elmira and biked the Guelph to Goderich (G2G) Trail westward to Wallenstein. We went as far as the trail took us meeting up with the highway, to continue on, we'd have to take the hwy across the bridge to the other side and carry on, but we went the other way into town, scoped out the General Store, then took the side road back to the trail and biked back to Elmira

We saw some lovely landscapes on our ride which didn't come up on the camera as well as you can see with your eye, and lots of Mennonite families travelling the roads today. The only wildlife we saw besides some birds was a huge woodchuck! A lovely day.

  • First Bike Ride Tonight, Backroads of Alvinston 25 km
    6 Aug 2024

We biked 10 km to past Alvinston Cemetery to Oil Springs Line and back home again, it's only Tara's 3rd bike ride since 2022, so this was a warmup ride to get my leg muscles used to it again. We saw 6 deer on our ride tonight, 2 were in the Alvinston cemetery, the other 4 were in the field after at the back, 3 adult deer and one fawn sitting next to his mama. I felt a happy tired when I got home, it was just right for a first ride in that long time, and Lyle did an additional 5 km afterwards. He went down River St to Brooke Line and back again. A good first ride for this challenge, and we got home before the mosquitos came out for their smorgasbord.
