Alexa Dacres
I am the proud grandmother of a courageous young lady who has been fighting cancer for 11 years. Alexa was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a terminal childhood cancer at the young age of 9 years old, she is now 20 and has relapsed 6 times. There is no cure for this cancer, but there are treatments you can try of course, which she has done, all of them. But none of these procedures guarantee survival. This young girl has been through more than most adults have been through in their lifetime. Alexa has been fighting cancer for half of her lifetime. Besides having to deal with all the nasty treatments, hospital stays, and side effects of the treatment for all those years, cancer has taken so much more away from this beautiful girl, her childhood, teen years, parties, friends, prom, keeping a job, and dating just to mention a minute list of joys she's never experienced. Alexa is now an adult and can make her own decisions regarding treatment. Looking at it from her point of view is extremely difficult for us but she would rather have quality of life over quantity of life, and we will support her decision. Because our government is so broken, Alexa has been denied every financial aid she has applied for so her mom does everything in her power to take that stress away from Alexa. Alexa's health has been deteriorating in the last weeks, her pain is getting worse every day. No child should ever have to suffer through this kind of pain and suffering. Children deserve to be children, to play, grow, and learn. They need all of us to do everything we can to give them that life. I know first hand how amazing SickKids hospital is, but they desperately need funding to find a cure for these children. My Story
This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
Why? Because my granddaughter Alexa has been fighting Neuroblastoma cancer for over 10 years and over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.
