Alexa Hammer

I am the proud grandmother of a courageous young lady, Alexa Hammer. Unfortunately Alexa lost her battle with Neuroblastoma. She fought for over 11 years. There is no cure for this cancer, but there are treatments you can try of course, which she had done, all of them. But none of these procedures guarantee survival. This young girl went through more than most adults have been through in their lifetime. Alexa had been fighting cancer for half of her lifetime. Besides having to deal with all the nasty treatments, hospital stays, and side effects of the treatment for all those years, cancer took so much more away from this beautiful girl, her childhood, teen years, parties, friends, prom, keeping a job, and dating just to mention a minute list of joys she never experienced. Children deserve to be children, to play, grow, and learn. They need all of us to do everything we can to give them that life. I know first hand how amazing SickKids hospital is, but they desperately need funding to find a cure for these children. This August, I’m joining the Great Cycle Challenge once again to help fight kids’ cancer!

Why Because my granddaughter, Alexa Hammer, lost her battle with cancer. Alexa fought long and hard against neuroblastoma for over 10 years. Like her, more than 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, making it the leading cause of death from disease among children in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

I’m raising funds through my challenge in honor of Alexa to support SickKids Foundation, helping kids and enabling them to continue their important work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.
