Riding for a Childhood Free of Cancer: Jarrod Russell’s Story

At just four years old, Jarrod Russell’s life changed forever. He was diagnosed with a Grade III Astrocytoma—a tumour about the size of an egg on the front left side of his brain. The months that followed were filled with surgeries, radiation, hospital stays, and endless needles. “I know first-hand how it feels to be a prisoner in the hospital and endure the surgeries, the needles and treatments,” Jarrod shares. “I know how it feels to lose my hair, throw up regularly and watch other kids around me earn their wings. I lost a part of my childhood that I will never get back. That’s something I wouldn’t wish for any other kid to go through, and that is why I do what I do.”

Now 49, Jarrod still lives with the effects of his cancer fight. He is partially paralyzed on the right side of his body and with age has experienced more falls because of balance concerns. But none of these challenges slow him down. With the unconditional love of his family—three sisters, a brother, a very supportive mom, as well as the Lloydminster community,, Jarrod has found purpose and determination in riding his bike.

Ten years ago, Jarrod joined the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer. Since then, he has ridden an astonishing 12,058 km on his recumbent bike through the streets of Lloydminster. Even more inspiring, he has raised an incredible $304,629 for SickKids. In 2025, Jarrod was Alberta’s top fundraiser and ranked third across the nation.

For Jarrod, every ride is about more than the distance or the dollars raised—it’s about hope. He rides for the kids and his dad who just 2 years ago passed away from cancer. “My family’s unconditional support and guidance fuels my passions and motivates me to pursue my dream- a future where every child can reach their full potential, cancer-free.

Jarrod’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the extraordinary impact one person can make when they ride with heart. His journey remin
