I'm Riding For
Janice Kuipers
July 16, 1994 – August 1997 Janice loved to play and laugh, have fun and learn. She loved her stuffed kitties, her real cats, building towers, playing with her siblings, Barney, The Aristocats (over and over!), jumping in puddles, going to see Grandpa's cows, and going fast while Daddy ran with her "again!" Those she loved, she called "My Friend." Janice celebrated her third birthday with friends and Barney, then passed away at home one week later. She is remembered with love by her family.
My Story
This August, I'm riding in memory of my cousin, Janice Kuipers.
Janice was born on July 16, 1994, as the third child of my Uncle Rick and Aunt Helana. In September 1995 she was ill enough to bring her to the ER where she was diagnosed with a brain stem tumour. Surgery removed the tumour, and treatments began soon after. For the next 20 months, Janice and her family lived in and out of the hospital.
For Janice life was still that of any one, two, and three-year-old. She loved to play and laugh, have fun and learn. Care free, enjoy life. Janice loved to play with her stuffed kitties, her real cats, building towers, and to play with her siblings. She loved Barney, The Aristocats Disney movie(over and over lol). She loved jumping in puddles, pet rabbits, going to see Grandpa's cows, and go fast while Daddy ran with her (again!)
Those she loved, she called "My Friend"
Janice had a third birthday party with friends and Barney, then passed away at home one week later.
Although I don't remember as much as I wish I did, Janice's story has always been part of our family's story. As a husband and father of three boys, childhood cancer now hits me in a way I never truly understood before. I'm riding in Janice's memory and for every child and family facing childhood cancer today.
Uncle Rick and Aunt Helana shared some advice I'd like to pass along:
"If you know someone who has a child with cancer let them know you're thinking of them. It can be as simple as a frequent text, or email, or phone call. Flowers, take their other children out for the day, babysit allowing the family to go to church, do their laundry, cash for parking or eating out. Meals."
"Our family was greatly supported by Camp Trillium, Help a Child Smile, Give Kids the World and McMaster Sick Kids."
