I'm Riding For

Dylan and Mavrik

Dylan and Mavrik

I’m riding for my nephew Dylan, who spent 14 years living his life to the fullest even though he was battling cancer (and the nasty side affects from years of “adult based” chemotherapy and radiation). At 19 months he was diagnosed with “Bilateral Retinoblastoma”- cancer in both eyes. He fought and won that battle after 6 years of intensive protocols, the loss of his left eye and 0/400 vision. Within a few years, osteosarcoma in his left upper arm was found. Once again he endured the surgery and harsh chemotherapy. Through all this, he continued his schooling, his hobbies and spending as much time socializing with his friends. Unfortunately, at the age of 14, Dylan’s cancer metastasized into his lungs, followed by numerous surgeries over 18 months. After his courageous fight to beat this disease, Dylan passed away at the age of 16. That was May 29, 2008 and whenever I think of him, I remember his wit, smiles, hugs and unselfishness. His cancer did not define him!

My Story

31 Jul 2026

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer for my 5th year. (I’d missed riding last year due to illness.). The mileage that I set at this point in time may be low, but I’m being realistic with myself taking each day of August as it comes.

My 8 year old grandson Malcolm, has asked if he could ride with me this year to fundraise for kids cancer. He has watched his friend and classmate fight a rare cancer for the past two years and is in remission now. Another two of his friends are presently fighting cancer at BC Children’s Hospital. He has named our team the “CANCER CRUSHERS” and he will ride with me any chance he can and we’ll be sporting our Great Cycle Challenge jerseys to bring awareness to others.

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing “child oriented” treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.
