In memory of Alan Montgomery

This year will be my 8th year riding in the Great Cycle Challenge throughout the month of August in memory of Alan Montgomery. Please sponsor me in this Canada-wide effort to support our youngest cancer patients.

My Story

This August, I am taking part again in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer in honour of Alan and to support our youngest cancer patients across Canada. Throughout the month of August, a community of cyclists ACROSS Canada come together to cycle and raise funds to support the Sick Kids Foundation.

Right now, over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. This isn't right. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

Alan was my biggest cycling supporter, driving me to my drop off point or following me online to see where I was. Occasionally he would phone me and say "you're going the wrong way!". I am thankful to have good friends who watch out for me now.

Raising funds through the Great Cycle challenge is one way to support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing cancer treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer. Young children should not have to deal with these treatments, and parents shouldn't have to watch a child deal with side effects. We've come a long way to fight cancer, and we still have a way to go. Please join me in supporting this cause.

This year will be my 8th year cycling in this fundraiser. Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

THE DOME

Friday's ride took me to the Saddledome. I don't have memories of attending many games. My memories of the Dome are around the excitement of it being built ahead of Calgary hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics. I was a volunteer before and throughout the games and remember how exciting it was to have a new and special building for the athletes and for Calgarians. If I remember correctly Alan and I attended a skating event as well as a hockey game during the games. Alan was a big hockey fan (Detroit Red Wings...) and any chance we had to go to a game there was fun.
