I'm Riding For
The Kids
For ALL the kids! For my Granddaughter Kylie. "The Bug" does not have cancer, she has my heart, my soul, and every fiber of my life held in her little smile. (When she isn't being a terrorist) She is the Granddaughter I was never supposed to have met having been handed a terminal diagnosis in 2013.
My Story
My name is Richard Bone, and for over a decade, I’ve been fighting a relentless battle with cancer. My journey began in December 2012 with a diagnosis of Stage IV colon cancer that quickly changed my life. Since then, I’ve faced multiple surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy, and several new cancer diagnoses—including bladder and throat cancer. There were moments when the odds were overwhelmingly against me, but with hope, determination, and the unwavering support of my loved ones, I kept moving forward.
Through every setback and every victory, I’ve learned just how strong the human spirit can be. I ride in the Great Cycle Challenge Canada for the 6th time not just for myself, but for everyone who faces cancer and for the families who stand beside them. Together, we can make a difference—because nobody fights alone.
Thank you for supporting the Sick Kids Foundation and helping to give hope to so many on their own cancer journeys.
I may have cancer, but cancer doesn’t have me!

Kick Cancer's Butt Day 2026
12 Aug 2026I don't recall how I found out about the Great Cycle Challenge Canada, but I do recall why I decided to get involved.....
You see, I started fighting cancer at Christmas 2012. My first diagnosis was Colon Cancer, Stage IV with mets to liver. Following surgery to remove 2/3 of my large intestine, two large chunks off my liver, appendix and gall bladder, we started chemo. After a few months it was discovered the cancer had spread to several lymph nodes and I was then listed as terminal, placed on palliative care treatments and given a 5% chance of surviving the year.
Well, after battling that, 5 times bladder cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma requiring 20 hours throat reconstruction and 6 weeks daily radiation, losing a kidney in 2022, I am still here to tell my story.
Part of that story has included participating in this Great Cycle Challenge Canada since 2021. I have been fortunate in my survival, and been the recipient of boundless amounts of support in my own battles, and this charity has turned into a way for me to give back while helping others, helping fund the research and treatments of our most valuable assets, the children.
These kids are fighting for their little lives instead of running around, playing, riding bikes, and skinning little knees. As an adult I have found it hard at times to understand "Why me?", I can't imagine being a child going through some of the treatments I've been through. This is why I dedicate myself to this charity eache August.
If you are able, I sure would appreciate your continued support in my goal to raise $5000.00 to help the kids in this battle. Over the years your support has helped motivate and inspire not only me, but each and every rider and kid in the fight for their lives.
Thank You so much for your continued support!
I may have cancer, but cancer doesn’t have me!

Ride #2
5 Aug 2026Well, the gout has subsided a little more and I was able to get out for a nice evening ride. The furthest ride this year, and furthest on the new bike!
If this trend keeps up I'll be a happy camper!
Speaking of camping, We will be in Edmonton for the next few days so Lisa can participate in a Flat Coat Retriever Specialty show. Of course I'll be required to help out, but I also plan on doing some e CC plotting along the North Saskatchewan River!

Getting there...
3 Aug 2026After enduring a rather excruciating gout attack, it's looking like I'm on the mend and will see how applying pressure to the pedals works out for me today!
This week I'll be in Edmonton for a few days and hope to get some exploring by bike in along the river valley.
