My Story

26 Jun 2020

This August, in memory of Andrew, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer.

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it. Andrew at 17, should not have been diagnosed with colon cancer, and he should have celebrated not only his 19th birthday, but his 99th too.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • An Incredible Journey
    2 Sep 2020

What an incredible journey riding in the Great Cycle Challenge has been. The moment I registered I was filled with mixed emotion. Sadness missing Andrew, worry that I would disappoint, hope for the future and a cure that would alleviate the suffering of children and their families and, determination that I was going to do this come hell or high water! Emotions ebbed and flowed throughout. There were many highs as the km's and donations grew, many tears for Andrew, and the occasional pang of worry that I'd not make it to the tops of the hills on my mountain rides, and with no AAA or a cab to call for a rescue, quiting was not an option! 🀣.

On my rides, I drew strength from many of you who have provided me a great source of love, support and inspiration over the years. I asked that you be my coach, and you came through 10-fold πŸ€—β€. I needed you and you didn't let me down. Many well wishes, thoughtful messages and phone calls kept me pushing forward.

I am so proud of US! We contributed to 4,331,327km ridden and $9,199,102 raised! That is really something to feel good about β€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

As the GCC comes to a close, it is fitting that September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Please keep the little ones currently fighting their greatest battle, in your thoughts and hearts.

The final fundraising tally will come out around October after riders have had an opportunity to load cash donations and collect their pledges, but my word, I'd say its been a hugely successful campaign event!

Thank you all so much for supporting the SickKids Foundation, the important research they are doing, and programs they provide. Thank you, for supporting me and my ride in memory of my child, your grandson, nephew, cousin, friend. Andrew was with me every km of the journey. The solo dragonfly often at my side, reminded me, that I am not alone❀

    Much love to you all!

  • Sunwapta Falls to Jasper, for Andrew
    17 Aug 2020

August 15, marked the 12th anniversary of Andrew's passing. It's been an emotional few days. The beauty here in the mountains is breathtaking, and I am overwhelmed by it. Andrew would have loved it here. As I cycled Hwy 93 Saturday, getting lost in the views, pushing up and flying back down the hills, I remembered how much Andrew loved to bike. I imagined him doing the extreme mountain riding here, and I am certain he would have conquered the trails, jumps, and crazy dangerous maneuvers, and then given me many heart attacks while recounting his experience, because that was Andrew. He loved the thrill a touch of danger gave, and he certainly loved to get a rise out of mom. Many, many tears flowed on my ride, and with deep determination and an angels push, got me to the finish line much faster than I anticipated. We did it Andrew, we did it β€πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ€πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing love and support. And, for your donations to SickKids in Andrews memory. Cancer needs to go. No more suffering, no more loss.

  • Soooo windy today!!!
    9 Aug 2020

I'm pleased to report I managed an 87km ride today despite the wind. Steady at 29km from the west, and holy those 53km wind gusts were a tad nerve racking at times! Thankfully I didn't end up in a ditch or sucked into the traffic vortex!

I'm 210 km into my 500 km goal. When I'm out there, free from the bustling city, I think about those who have brought me strength and inspiration over the years, and it drives me forward.

Today's difficult ride, is dedicated to all the bereaved mom's (and dad's) in my world. We've been brought together through immense tragedy and unbearable loss. Together we have faced many uphill battles, spiraled when the world moved faster than we could, sought comfort in the moments we could not imagine continuing on, or ever believe that someday, a smile might cross our face because we've a small touch of joy in our world. I love you all so much ❀.

Thank you for everyone's ongoing love and support, together, we can KICK CANCERS BUTT!

  • Today, the challenge begins
    1 Aug 2020

Today, as I sat waiting for my bike light to charge, and my cycle gear to finish drying, I was overcome with emotion. I've been working hard and highly focused on getting physically ready for the Great Cycle Challenge, and I must say, incredibly motivated by the outpouring of encouragement and sponsorship!

But today, as I sat reading all the text messages pouring in, it became, yet another sobering day. Andrew fills my thoughts, and I miss him terribly. The young ambassadors of GCC, have sent words of encouragement to the participants, and their will to fight cancer, to survive, reminds me so much of Andrew during his battle. As I wiped away the tears, and moved through the grief that is still there, Andrews legacy, and who he was, became my inspiration and purpose for today's kickoff ride.

It was the ride of the damsels and dragonflies. Proof Andrew was riding by my side. ❀

  • 🚴‍♀️ $3015 raised!
    19 Jul 2020

I want to take a moment, to express my love and appreciation, for my and Andrew's family, friends, and colleagues.

When I committed to the Challenge a few short weeks ago, I really wasn't sure what to expect, and I questioned my ability to meet the goals I'd set. I am completely overwhelmed with the generous donations made to SickKids Foundation in Andrew's memory, and I am truly touched and encouraged by all the supportive messages I am receiving.

Today, I rode 75 km! Your cheers are pushing me to do better, to go farther and faster. Look out August, I may just surpass my 500 km goal!

In 13 days the Challenge officially begins. Contributions to date have blown my fundraising goal out of the water, 5x's over! I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Super Hero Jersey to wear on my next ride. I couldn't be doing this without you, thank you! ❀

  • Pouring Rain & jerseys?!
    8 Jul 2020

The rain in AB is sure putting a damper on practice riding again this week. BUT! Tonight, I found my Candadian Cycle Challenge jersey on the front steps! I received one because you wonderful people donated $500!

I've since reached an unbelievable $2215!

    THANK YOU! πŸ€—β€πŸ€—

If our fundraising effort reaches $2500, a second very special Super Hero jersey designed by the children will also be delivered to me, compliments of an amazing sponsor for the Sick Kids Foundation, in recognition of your amazing generosity, and to keep me going!!!

So, despite my bike (aka Ruby), getting totally drenched on the way to my riding point, and having to turn back home, I am super excited for Thursday when the sun is supposed to shine and my wheels can hit the road again!

Thank you again to all my sponsors, lets do this!

  • Remembering Andrew's final Canada Day, 2008
    1 Jul 2020

    Family and friends,

I've been working hard in preparation of Augusts Cycle Challenge . I've also been reminiscing over old photos. Andrew's final Canada Day was spent with family at Lake Huron, then he zoomed home to see "the girls." I love this photo, it's one of many special images captured of him that day.

I'm reaching out to family and friends for sponsorship, and also ask that you be my coach. This is hard. Really hard, and I need your love and encouragement to see it through. And the Sickkids Foundation needs you too, every dollar raised goes to necessary cancer research.

Stay safe while you celebrate today, wave a flag, set off a fire cracker, and raise a toast to Andrew ❀ thanks so much!
