I'm Riding For

Heather Ross, our children & grandchildren

Heather Ross, our children & grandchildren

As I ride each day from spring until winter, I will be thinking about my courageous and inspirational partner Heather who I celebrated our 40th anniversary with in April. She continues to set an amazing example for all our family and anyone who knows her with how she lives her life each and every day. She has managed all the challenges of breast cancer since 1999 and Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer since 2011 in a dignified way that gives great hope and cheer to others. Her toughness is beyond measure and there is no quit in her character.

My Story

13 Jun 2019

This June, once again, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. My wife & I sometimes see these young children when we are at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre & Toronto Western where she has been receiving ongoing care for metastatic breast cancer. As any parent or grandparent like us would say.....all kids should be living life, not fighting for it . So I am raising funds through my challenge to ride each day in June ( & I plan to do what I did in 2018 by also riding each day beyond the end of June until November ) to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer. Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

    23 Jul 2019

This 26 KM ride from Larder Lake to Esker Lake Road ( half way point to Kirkland Lake ) & back again is the most challenging of all the routes I’ve been doing these past 2 years during the Great Cycle Challenge. Going out is generally against the wind and mostly uphill to some degree or other, with some really long climbs that seem to go on & on. Beauty of it is the return trip with the wind on the back and just sailing down those same hills & it seems even what seemed like flatter stretches on the way to Esker Lake were inclines and are now easy…peasy. Love northern Ontario

    22 Jul 2019

Feels good to be riding here in the north again in so much cooler and less humid weather....feels more like it did in June in The County. Love these rolling hills and lakes everywhere along the highway. Last year this was the start of my rides and this year, coming at the end of the challenge, these hills seems so much easier to climb now.

  • July 26th ends the event for 2019
    17 Jul 2019

I've been riding in the Great Cycle Challenge since June 1st to fight kids' cancer! So far I've ridden 907.0 km of my 1000 km target and raised $2431 towards my goal of $2500. The challenge ends on July 26th when the website is closed until next years ride.

Why have I done this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Canada. My challenge has been tough, but it's nothing compared to what these brave kids and their families face every day of their lives as they battle this terrible disease. Kids should be living life, NOT fighting for it.

And so I have been riding to support cancer research and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve...

To all those who have sponsored me or other riders across Canada, you're AWESOME! There is still time for those who wish to support me by making a donation through my fundraising page by July 26th:

    https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/DonRoss

All funds raised will support SickKids Foundation to provide care, develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancers. Thank you for your support.

    6 Jul 2019

Felt awesome to get soaked and cooled off on the last half of my 22 km ride today in some badly needed rainfall. Was thinking of Bella and imagining her playing around her yard , smiling and laughing in this rain instead of being in a hospital bed watching rain through a window. Riding to help make this happen for Bella and kids like her.

    28 Jun 2019

We're in the final few days of the official June challenge but we're not done yet. Our legs are tired and our bodies are weary, but we'll keep riding until the very end as we remember what these courageous kids face every day of their lives...

They're not giving up, and neither will we.

As we approach the end of the official month of the challenge, here's a photo reminder of the children we're riding to remember and support this month. 💗 These are just some of the incredible kids we've ridden for over the past 4 years of Great Cycle Challenge. So I'll keep pedaling all through next month too and clocking more kilometres for these kids since the website will remain open throughout July to receive donations and log kilometres. Thanks to all our supporters so far and those who may still pitch in later on.

  • 20 KM on a Windy Day....Idle Wind Farm.....Shameless Politicians
    22 Jun 2019

Not a day goes by that I don't think about how insane these politicians are who are planning to spend between $100-200 million of our tax dollars to destroy our small local wind farm that was terminated last year just weeks before it was to be completed. Then I consider how hard every person involved in this great cycle challenge has worked to raise just over $4 million to this point to help kids with cancer. Mind-boggling to consider how much good those hundreds of millions would do if better directed to where it is most needed, while allowing 9 turbines to produce clean electricity to power nearly half the homes in Prince Edward County yearly. #savewhitepines www.windinthecounty.com

37 Km ride today thinking about this little girl and knowing why we are raising these funds for Sick Kids Hospital. She goes to the same school as our grand-daughter in Ottawa. If I wasn't too old to be tested I would in a heartbeat. Please read this article and if you or anyone you can think of who qualifies to be tested as a match for a possible donor, please think about helping this family in their hour of need. Miracles can happen and she needs one now.Thanks.

  • Some things I'll be pondering while riding today
    19 Jun 2019

    Dear Don,

I hope you're well and your legs don't hate you (yet).

Over the past 19 days, riders from every province and territory have pedaled 1,437,831 km on all types of bikes and in all kinds of weather. It's been amazing to witness this fantastic event grow over the past 4 years, and the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge is set to break all the records.

Here's just some of the key stats so far this month:

22,584 riders are taking part from all corners of the country.

66,901 individual donations have been received to support your efforts.

$3,969,860 has been raised (so far), which is incredible.

Together, we've logged 79,239 rides and ridden a total of 1,437,831 km which is the equivalent of pedaling for 2,863 days (non-stop).

    ...and we're not done yet.

Don, YOU are part of our movement to end childhood cancer.

On the other side, over those 19 days you've been riding in the challenge:

73 families have heard the painful words, "your child has cancer".

We've lost 8 children to this terrible disease.

These families deserve more effective treatments and better outcomes for their kids. And that's why cancer research is so important to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. While our month of riding will make a huge difference to the children, siblings, parents and families affected by cancer, we can all strive for the day when childhood cancer is a distant memory.

As you get out on your bike over these next 11 days, remember these kids as you climb those hills and turn those pedals...

THANK YOU so much for riding this month to fight kids' cancer.

    Have a wonderful day.

  • My longest ride so far....for my wife Heather
    18 Jun 2019

Dedicating this 32 KM ride today for Heather, who just a week ago today was undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumour. She was home the same day, out for 2 short walks the day after, then by 3rd day doing our usual 1 hour morning walks together. Here is the amazing Dr who we owe our gratitude to Dr Mark Bernstein of Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. https://www.uhn.ca/corporate/News/Pages/Dr_Mark_Bernstein_writes_two_new_books.aspx

    16 Jun 2019

Our buddy Matteo created this special 'THANK YOU' sign to celebrate my efforts so far in riding 238.0km and raising $1946 to fight kids' cancer!

What a cutie. ❤️And together across Canada riders have pedalled 1,225,428km and raised $3,887,311 (so far) to fight kids' cancer! That's INCREDIBLE! 👍

    But we're not done yet...

We'll keep pumping our legs, climbing those hills and clocking those kilometres to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

  • Record setting donation day yesterday!
    14 Jun 2019

    I have some awesome news...

Kick Cancer's Butt Day raised $783,246 to fight kids' cancer!

It's incredible. THANK YOU so much for your butt-kicking efforts to give kids like Alex, Simi and Matteo the brighter futures they deserve.

Yesterday was a record day for us, and we can't believe the results! The day was crazy, but then the support really climbed into the night, it was so exciting to watch!

We've been receiving lots of calls and messages from our families who were so excited to see everyone taking action on the day to end childhood cancer. Many of them were watching the site all day and they really could not believe it. :)

And that's just one more great thing you've done through your fundraising efforts...you've given these families a reason to smile, and more importantly, you've given them hope for a cancer-free future and the support they need to continue their fight to beat this awful disease.

For that Don, I cannot thank you enough.

As you know, three wonderful supporters, Jake Herman, John Francis and Katie Taylor were personally matching donations up to $500,000... I'll let Alex have the final words of thanks in the photo here as this is why it's so important for us to all be helping as we are.

    7 Jun 2019

Thinking about this young man today as I rode my 24 KM on this sunny day, and hoping that the funds raised will help him spend a lot more sunny days outdoors and a lot less time in hospital. Also , knowing that Kevin has the same type of cancer as Terry Fox had, it reminded me of the impact Terry Fox had and still has on my life and that of so many people all these decades later. Read about the selfless act that Kevin did with money raised by family & friends in a benefit on his behalf. https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Pages/the-kids/meet-kevin

  • 21 KM pedalling for Marky today
    5 Jun 2019

Really good ride today, thinking about Marky and his bravery and courage. Got a surprising example of another person with those qualities which made me take a rest stop half way along my route on Miller Rd. Some skilled pilot in a powerful Bi-Plane was practicing aerobatics above the Picton airstrip and for about 15 mins I was in awe of their amazing abilities.....what a show. Marky, I think, is even more awesome than that, with how he maneuvers all the ups and downs of his life

  • Matteo was the wind at my back today
    3 Jun 2019

This was a very symbolic 14 KM ride for me today and thinking about Matteo made it a breeze! Had thought about waiting for the strong 50 to 70 KM/Hr winds to ease up to make for an easier and safer ride, but kids like Matteo and my wife Heather don't get to take the easy way out and pick & choose their cancer treatments and tests. They get on with it and struggle through it. Going out the 7 KM into the wind took 25 mins of hard riding & there were a few times I was pedalling so hard in the easiest gear but briefly making little headway it seemed. Coming back with the wind on my back took only 15 mins and it was so easy in contrast. Mother Nature is an amazing force to be respected and appreciated and so is the determination and strong spirit of kids like Matteo who we are all riding for.

  • Training rides are done....first official ride today.
    1 Jun 2019

The 2019 Great Cycle Challenge starts TODAY across Canada. My 20 KM ride just now around the White Pines Windfarm was with my buddy Alex riding along in my heart. Alex has been fighting acute myeloid leukemia since Christmas and has spent most of his time in hospital. This brave little man is currently in treatment which means he can't ride with us this month, so he was asked to be the official GCC starter' to kick off the challenge.

  • I'm riding for children like Alex
    22 May 2019

Tribute Day is this Thursday, May 23.

This is a day where the GCC community will unite across the country to honour those we've lost, celebrate the survivors and take action for those kids still fighting for their lives. ❤️

Today, we're very excited to introduce you to the official starter of the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge...

    Meet Alex.

7-year-old Alex was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on Christmas Eve last year...

And this little man is as tough as they get.

Why? In this photo below, Alex is holding up a necklace with a total of 320 bravery beads strung onto it.

    Now let's break that down...

    Alex

Bravery beads are given to children with life challenging illnesses to commemorate each procedure or event they endure throughout their treatment.

A bead is earned for every poke, prod, procedure, puncture, tube insertion, round of chemotherapy, transfusion, scan, surgery and more.

Alex has 320 beads (and counting). He's only 7 years old.

Right now, he gets at least 3 beads a day as a result of his treatment. WOW.

Since Alex's diagnosis, here's some of what this courageous boy has endured in just 5 months...

    * 4 rounds of intense chemotherapy

    * 4 lumbar punctures

    * 1 bone marrow aspirate

    * Countless pokes, blood draws, port accesses and shots

His first round of chemotherapy lasted 23 days, his second round lasted 29 days...

For the first 4 months of his treatment, Alex spent only 5 nights at home with his family.

The road ahead for Alex is still unclear...

But throughout his brutal chemotherapy regimen, Alex always has a smile on his face. 😊

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

Don, your fundraising efforts will support cancer research to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer to help kids like Alex and save young lives. www.greatcyclechallenge.ca/riders/donross

  • First Day of Spring.....First Ride of 2019
    21 Mar 2019

Felt great to get back on the old Peugeot again yesterday after a long winter. Did my favourite riding loop for an hour , 20 km around the White Pines Windfarm here in our area. We are still fighting to keep it from being dismantled after the contract was recklessly cancelled after the election last summer, when it was weeks away from completion. I won't stop fighting to defend our children and grandkids' future and I won't stop fighting to conquer cancer in our lifetime. As I ride this year I know I'll be thinking about how much closer we'd be to a cure for cancer if the $100-200 Million of Ontario taxpayer money that will be wasted to kill this small wind farm, were directed instead to cancer research and treatment!
