In 2005 I bought my bike. My bike was purchased for the purpose of getting to classes at university and to get to work. She was a decent mid range bike that got a lot of kilometres in her early years. As life went on my bike, which we will name Berta, went into storage as I finished university, got a proper job, and life went on. For many years my bike watched me from the garage as I got married, had kids, and life got busy.
Now, the reason I have named my bike Berta is because all of this started with a very rare strain of salmonella, called Berta. One day daddy ate a burger that was not fully cooked and daddy got sick. Really sick. Turns out, salmonella is contagious. Daddy passed the salmonella to our oldest, who shared it with me, and finally our youngest got the salmonella. For her, she saw some of the uncommon, but possible side effects, which landed us in emerge. It was this emerge trip, where you think you’ll just be told to push more Tylenol, fluid, and go home, but unfortunately we were given the news no parent ever wants to hear. It was a nightmare!
As we try to support our baby in this journey the one thing she wants is answers and a cure. So, this August the one thing my son and I can do is raise awareness and funds for cancer research for kids. So with this, Berta has come out of storage and she is being asked to do at least 100km. She is squeaky, she is rusty, but she is capable.
