My Story

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • What An Amazing Journey! Thank you!
    11 Oct 2020

Hello everyone and Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian sponsors!

This will be my final note regarding my cycling experience. I will close out my GCC2020 journey by saying a final most sincere thank you, and how proud we all should be, to all. Here is my certificate - it really should include all of your names too. :)

I will keep up the riding over the winter indoors and look forward to helping these incredible kids again next year.

I couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.

  • Ride for Lori - Wednesday, Aug. 26th
    30 Aug 2020

Hello all. I have two updates for you today as I was remiss in sharing one of the most significant rides for me thus far during this journey - Wednesday of this week, hundreds of riders all across Canada rode to finish the kilometers for one of our own, a fallen angel, Lori Neville. May she rest in peace.

There were 20 of us here in downtown Toronto who went out and it was wonderful. Such an honour to ride for her and to add to her km goal total.

Our amazing #GCCCanada community also helped to raise her fund raising, in just over 3 days, Lori's page went from $700 to over $11,000!!! Our initial goal was to get her past the $2500 mark so her 3 year old son could get her "Superhero" / Spider-woman Jersey and well, as you can see, that did not prove difficult.

We know this can be a very dangerous sport. Things can just happen so quickly. Taken from us while actually riding for this incredible charity, she will be missed but never forgotten.

And what was nice was the charity agreed to allow our km to not only go to Lori's page, but to our own as well. We did 19kms Wednesday!

Thank you all again for your support with this. It really does mean a lot. Xo

  • 200KM DONE!!
    23 Aug 2020

    Hello all!

I'm thrilled to share that with 45kms in this weekend (20 yesterday, 25 today) I have now reached my goal of 200km!!! Yayayayayay!! #GCCCanada

So in pure SJ style, I of course do have a bit of a fun story to share with you about my finish... :)

I wanted my 200km "finish line" to be special, so today I went over to the Toronto Islands on the 8:30am ferry. Over to the Islands for the first time this year.

I had an absolute blast cycling around the island. Until 1) my phone died out on the pier at the 20.62 km mark. :( D-oh! But my work phone (yes, I carry 2 - and am thrilled I did so today! without a tracking app on it though)still had a bit of juice left and at least allowed me to google map how far it was from the pier to the Ward's Island Ferry (2.5km).

So I got there in plenty of time for the 10:30am return ferry. Time to stretch a little, drink more water... and then

    2) i wander over to the ferry schedule on the fence and I see it's not Ward's ferry that leaves at 10:30am as I thought I'd read last night on line, it's the Centre Island Ferry!!! Double D-oh!!!! I'm at the wrong dock!! With 10:17am showing on my watch.... I go high-tailing it to Centre Island. I was laughing at/with myself along the way as it brought back memories of my running through an airport, late for a gate: "on your left.... passing on your left...", gosh i miss that :( But it really was so funny. I don't think I've used my bell so much in all the kms I've ridden in this lifetime than I did in these last 3 kms!! I am sure I was going my fastest pace ever (likely still only 22 or 23 kms / hr ish, but man, on my 1995, weighs a ton!, mountain bike, I was riding hard to get there!

I did make the 10:30am ferry back (with a few minutes to spare). Made it back just in time for my 11am roof top deck reservation at my condo. :) :) :) Did I mention I love living downtown?! ;)

I then sat on the roof top lounger, overlooking the very islands I had just ridden, taking in my accomplishments, while sipping from my water bottle that just happens to say "Today is a good day to change the world". And YES, it sure is!!! WE all did!! (those with me on FB will see more pics to this story soon).

Anyhow. WE did it!!! Each and every one of you were with me at each km.

And I am proud - I did it!!! 200 kms is SO much farther than I've ever ridden - in all years combined before now!! Never mind in just over 3 weeks! I'm elated!!! But moreso am over the moon as WE have raised over $4000!!!!!!!! Is that not so incredible?! WE did that! You can all feel proud knowing you have helped to ensure these incredible kids are receiving some of the much needed help they deserve.

I cannot thank all of you enough for being on this journey with me. During this time especially. It's been incredible. On so many levels.... I'll be sad to see it end Aug. 31st.

So! that said though, every Km and any further monies raised after this is pure bonus. I do look forward to getting out more before the EOD Aug. 31st!! I will keep you posted!

    T H A N K Y O U!!! xo :)

  • 100KM Goal Accomplished!!
    9 Aug 2020

Hello all. Hope you are enjoying the weekend.

I am so elated to announce I have officially accomplished my initial goal of 100km! I had an amazing ride of 18km yesterday (Saturday) along the water / highway 33 just east of Kingston (visiting mom and dad). It was beautiful. And I was so pleased to wear my "Super Hero" / Spider-Man jersey for the first time as I met my goal. :)

So... with more time yet to ride in August, I have now raised my goal to 200km.... Woo hoo!!

I'm ready to give this my all, and cannot thank you all enough for choosing to be long this journey with me. As mentioned earlier - I may be the one wearing the jersey, but it really is all of you who are the true heros!!! xoo

  • FAB Birthday Ride - 3/4 of the Way There Now!
    7 Aug 2020

Hello all! This update is a little long as I have a few great things to update today - thanks for reading all the way though. πŸ™

    * I had such an amazing Birthday yesterday - it started with a new personal best ride! 32.44kms! Yayay!

    * I'm now over 3/4 to my goal!

New to cycling and this amazing event with #GCCCanada, I really had a hard time initially knowing how many km to commit to - I am enjoying this (and all of your support) so much. I do think I need to up that now!! Pls stay tuned for that! :)

    * I have a really Good News Story and a special mention I must share - I went down to my bike Wednesday to a hand written note taped to it. It was asking me if I minded swapping bike positions on our condo garage common lock up area (just swap with one position over so a family of bikes that were separated by only me, could then be together). The note so kindly offered to give me $30 to pay for the balance of my bike space rental for the year and to thank me for my troubles.

Well it was no trouble at all of course and instead of accepting or declining the $, I explained how I was raising $ for kids' cancers and suggested if they didn't mind my sending them my personal page link, that they pls put that $30 to my fund raising and they of course said yes.

Well - Jim + Jane - my newly found amazing neighbours - your $120 donation knocked my socks off!!! THANK YOU!!!! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ

I'm so thrilled to be doing this, and again, so truly overwhelmed by all of your support!

WE are at $3,340 now!!!!! Wowsa!! Never in my wildest dreams....

And for those of you who like stats - I am so very proud of us - we rank so highly for fund raising for the event. We are currently:

    * in Ontario out of 1536 riders - 34th

    * Nationally out of over 50,000 riders across

Canada - 58th (THAT especially blows my mind!)

Woo Woo!!! I'm doing my happy dance!! πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ

    * Sorry for any confusion, my page posted in error yesterday that I had in accomplished my 100km goal. That has now been rectified and I'm now officially registered properly at 84% / 84 km. πŸ‘

    WE are doing amazing things!!

HUGE hugs to all of you!! πŸ€—πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ€—πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

    1 Aug 2020

Hello all! I had to write to share - Aug. 1st is here!! Day 1 of our official riding to help fight kids's cancers (everything before now was just practice).

I am thrilled to say, The kids, and all of you who have so kindly sponsored me, were definitely motivating me this morning - you see, I hit a personal best!!! :) I rode 23.56km this morning (at a great pace I might add). I know relative to most of my fellow riders it is not so far, but it was far for me! And I couldn't be more proud and excited.

    Thank you ALL for that!

I'm also elated to share that our fundraising has hit a total of $2795!!! I'm speechless. Thank you thank you thank you. And with that, in the mail comes a new "Super Hero, Spider-man" jersey! It won't be pretty but as promised, I will share pics! LOL. While I may be the one wearing it, all of YOU are the true super heros.

Thank you so much for being with me on this journey.
