My Story

18 May 2018

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer and many other illnesses

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

  • Memorial Ride for Dorelle & Bill MacDonald ~ 2014
    28 Jun 2018

I asked Jennifer (grandaughter) and Mary (daughter) to give me some background before I started my memorial ride today. It was gorgeous and sunny. I captured many pictures of things in "twos". It was obvious from them passing within weeks of each other that they simply could not live without each other, Dorelle passed from cancer and Bill from heart complications.

Jen: Dorelle "blue eyes" and Bill MacDonald. Married 64 years 18 grandchildren. Their hobbies were loving each other. Passed in 2014

Mary: Remembering their wonderful senses of humour, practical wisdom, kind natures, personal strength, and all embracing love of family, faith, friends and life!!

  • Awenda Park Encounter...
    28 Jun 2018

I was riding through Awenda Park last weekend and a car came by me sloooowwwwly and turned around sloooowwwllly. Apparently a big discussion was going on in that car if that was really me?? out in the middle of nowhere ?? peddling like heck. It turned out to be Teri Lynn and Martin who had just checked into camping at Awenda. They are great clients, GCC donators and the cutest couple on the planet ❤💜 I was so excited seeing them that we literally got eaten alive by mosquitoes during this selfie lol

Hero Ride for Madison June 27, 2018

On my Great Cycle Challenge website a couple days ago I wrote about meeting Lisa, a Sick Kid's Mom. I was doing a memorial ride for Callen and I thought that a picture of Lisa with a Stop Sign might be the most appropriate picture, we both agreed! Stop Cancer. Lisa saw my GCC cycle jersey and so the story begins...Madison was just a toddler when she was diagnosed with Leukemia and spent her time going through treatment at Sick Kid's. Now she is the most gorgeous young lady, a cancer survivor who I choose to call a HERO. Any child who must endure the nightmare of Leukemia let alone the anguish of her parents watching her go through the treatments deserves to be recognized. Sick Kid's is simply awesome. Saved her life. Madison is now a healthy thriving teenager with her whole life ahead of her. It was an honour to ride for Madison today 💜💖

Happy Birthday Damien! I did a 36 km ride for your 36 years and celebrated Callen's short time on earth with the most beautiful ride through Awenda Park. His little spirit kept me going and my bike flew on angel wings. Love to you and Chantelle today XOXOXO

  • Tribute Ride for Susan & Steve Evans ~ June 22, 2018
    23 Jun 2018

Susan and Steve, and Susan's parents, both sons were clients, Jeff Evans who helped me with a memorial tribute donation for his parents, filled me in on a few things they loved. Susan loved her trailer and travelling with her 2 puppies. She would often leave the trailer and head down to the water. Sue was my inspiration for getting sober, sometimes we set examples for others without realizing it, but I told her one day because I was so grateful. She hugged me and darned near squeezed the life out of me!!! I miss Sue. I met Steve at his house, due to progressive disease, Steve was confined to a wheelchair. Steve was one hell of a warrior, he fought. I loved popping over with forms and chatting with him. It was a great honour to ride for these 2 beauties, an absolute honour, thanks Jeff

  • Meeting Lisa/Not a Coincidence
    23 Jun 2018

They are paving a portion of the community. A woman on the road crew (Lisa) has one of those STOP/SLOW sign so I thought it would be awesome to have a selfie done with the SLOW sign, it kind of fits my new motto. So she notices my GCC shirt and says I'm a Sick Kid's Mom. OMG! Okay so her daughter Madison spent time at Sick kids with Leukemia when she was 2. Madison is now approaching 17, in grade 11 and thriving. She is a survivor! Tears were pouring down my face and the goosebumps didn't leave me for a good 10 minutes. Fate, I think not. I captured Lisa with her STOP sign and we both agreed it meant STOP Cancer. SO! Grateful to listen to your beautiful story. Please feel free to forward Madison's before and afters or whatever you want to send me. My Dad had the gift of talking to people, in that department I am not that forward but his gift I am trying out baby steps at a time. Learning to say Hi, ask people how they are, what is your story. Just a quick hello which I am learning to do. It would have been so sad to miss Lisa's story. Thanks Dad xoxo

  • Updating My Page
    21 Jun 2018

To those of you who don't use Facebook or Instagram I'm including a copy of what I posted and some pictures of course!I'm at that Turning Point that everyone talks about, in running terms it's called The Wall. Tonight I hit The Wall, and no amount of "well look what the children have to go through every day at SickKids", "well look what Terry Fox did everyday", change what was swirled around in my brain. I did several marathons by foot and the thought of literally doing one per day came in my head. When you have two hours to think and reflect all sorts of answers come. Pure & Simple... I have reset my kilometers to 500 it's not 600 but it's not 400 like last year either and I'm happy with that. I am a cyclist that loves to talk to people about what I'm doing, take tons of pictures and really enjoy the experience not rob it. Don't get me wrong, the trip to "almost" Elora LOL was lovely but it also left me exhausted and wondering how the heck I'm going to finish 600 km up in a week. So I took a page out of my program, I took the advice of my sponsor Tracey and made the decision to not kill myself in one more thing I'm trying to do. What I have learned over the last month, let alone 6 months is for sure endurance but also realizing where my limits are. The difference between enjoyment & exhilaration and absolute misery & frustration comes down to 100 km. Even though what I'm doing is all about SickKids a little self-care has to happen as well, and a little humility doesn't hurt either LOL. Thanks for listening! Thanks for all of you for being there with me on this journey ❤ @ Waterloo, Ontario

It is incredible when your clients can share their story about Sick Kid's and I am able to share as well my experience. Melissa Lee (Rachel's Mom) shared a beautiful story about her daughter:

We were told at our daughter, Rachel's year check up that we needed to go for some tests because the Dr heard a murmur. Once all tests were done we were told that if we didn't have this open heart surgery done for Rachel, she wouldn't live past 5.

She is now going on 15 and lives a very active lifestyle. She plays on a competitive softball team and loves to play volleyball as well.

    17 May 2018

This little sweetie pie is now officially part of my ride. Logan spent half of his first year at Sick Kid's with his Mom, Jennifer Walsh and Dad, Jordan Giblett. He was born with great intestinal difficulties and was released home at the end of 2017. He is proudly sporting his Blue Jay hat and he is just one more reason for me to give this my best. Love and hope conquers all

Yes it's that time of year again, YEAR 2!!!! I decided to get proactive and start my 500 kms before mid June!! I'm biking in memory of my Dad, John Ingram, who was one of the pioneer test bunnies for prostate cancer brachytherapy and beat that disease! Also in loving memory of little Callen Commisso who was the bravest and most loved SMA warrior. Please check out my page, I also started a team called the Georgian Bay Crop Dusters, gotta love it. I don't care if you just cheer me on, send 5 bucks or 500 bucks, you will see me pedalling my butt ?? in June, mostly in beautiful Georgian Bay. Thanks in advance for the love and support
