I'm Riding For

Cathy MIlls

I didn't start out with a person in mind. Rather, I have been remembering all those, over the years, who I have known living with cancer. My first cancer patient was a 14 year old girl I visited when I was also 14. This year I have been walking with my friend as she grieves for her daughter. Their story is woven together with many stories. Cathy Mills is my cousin, who fought cancer for 4 years and died this month. She was a formidable spirit, vivid and funny and wry. When I was little I thought of her as my very own "Chatty Cathy" like my favorite doll. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

My Story

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Karen

My Challenge

  • June 30 and 405 km finished!
    30 Jun 2019

Phew! I just had a 62 minute session on the spin bike and brought up my total to 405 km....so 5 over my 400 km goal.

It has been quite a month, gaining strength and stamina and tackling the distance. I am convinced that we change the world when we change ourselves.......and when we get together and pitch in, join up, share the load, come alongside and go with each other.

So...Thank you to all my sponsors. Your support gave me the determination to "get 'er done!" Together we've added to the work of finding cures for childhood cancers. Yay!

With 84 km to go by the end of Sunday, Dave and I set out this morning for a day cycling. We went west through Fish Creek Park then headed north, along the construction for the ring road to Glenmore Park. Through the Weaselhead then up through Lakeview, we got to Glenmore and tried heading along the reservoir on the east side but were cut off by the construction over the dam. So we retraced our steps and cross the Glenmore and went South through altidore then down through Stanley Park and into the downtown area. There are we stopped for a well-deserved lunch. from there we continued on 5th Street down to princess island and then picked up the pathway by the river along through past the zoo, then across the bridge into Inglewood and eventually passed the Inglewood bird sanctuary. Continued all the way down to carbon Park and then across at Southland and up the hill. But this time both of us were pretty tired. But it was the homeward stretch, so we were happy to see very familiar sights. I'll try to attach a map of the day. https://www.mapmyride.com/workout/3634177714

  • Gorgeous day 2 Evening Ride
    3 Jun 2019

Dave and I rode in Fish Creek Park tonight, down to the Bebo Grove parking lot. Lots of deer, a great heron, and active beavers along with the scent of pine forest, and the stark white poplar trunks wreathed in glorious bright green leaves overhead. What a great ride! I did manage a wee spill on a singletrack, cwhdn I was dodging a huge pothole and caught my front tire. No damage done, a short respite in the shrubbery to contemplate nature...

  • May is Retro....
    16 May 2019

So....back in Calgary and its pretty wet outside right now. Looking through photos I found an old pic. from a bike trip Dave and I did in the San Juan Islands back in 1987, I think it was. Huge green-rimmed glasses and a cute outfit on a loaded bike......ah, those were the days.

  • Yellowknife Bootcamp about to be completed!
    24 Apr 2019

2 months in Yellowknife = an active gym membership, yoga studio visitor and walking on average 12,000 steps a day (with a high of 20,000)indoor Spin Class and new bike shorts.

May brings a return to YYC, outdoor bike, yoga, the garden, and more walking....so the training is well underway and my fitness level has improved significantly. I'm looking forward to June and logging the KM's for the ride!
