My Story

21 Mar 2019

I will be at it again!...This June, I am once again taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

I will be riding EVERY day in the month of June to show my support to these brave warriors. A minimum of 30 k each day.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

My Challenge

  • The Quest for Ice Cream
    30 Jun 2019

    Challenge Accepted and Accomplished!

Thanks to the riding support of Julie, Kyle and Donna are final ride was a success! Kilometres attained and ice cream consumed.

Thank you so much everyone for their support this month. Until next year....

  • The Great Cycling Adventure!
    26 Jun 2019

Today, fellow Bike Chick and I took the Waterfront Trail into the City of Toronto. It was more of a challenge than we expected. A number of bike portages were required, some roads were rough and not overly road bike friendly, there was construction to contend with and of course the dreaded head wind.

We made it though! 75 k to the foot of the CN tower. I would have taken a photo but, more technical difficulties at my end and my phone battery died 🤨. As of this moment in time I am 1 k shy of my 1200 km goal with 4 days to ride!

Until tomorrow, see you on the road!

    25 Jun 2019

It took a lot to get out today. My brain kept singing in my head ‘I don’t want to ride’. It I ignored it and off I went for a warm afternoon ride. Nothing to eventful or remarkable happened during my ride, but when I got back I read a post from a fellow GCC rider who was attending her son’s grade 8 graduation. He had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was in junior kindergarten.

That is why I ride...for more kids to experience all the milestones of life.

Until tomorrow...see you on the road.

Today I went on a route I used to use all the time before the Cullen path was made. I haven’t gone this way yet this year so it gave me a ‘fresh’ ride. Definitely more traffic, more traffic lights and more crossing guards this way! Overall though I enjoyed the route, I think this was one of my fastest rides. Until tomorrow...see you on the road!

    23 Jun 2019

After feeling so tired yesterday, today I feel GOOD. Rode with my fellow Bike Chick today down to the Waterfront Trail and over to Oshawa, then up to see the peonies. I think this is the best I have ever seen the blooms. It was AMAZING. We spent about 30 min wandering around checking out the multitude of varieties and taking pictures and then made our way home. A perfect way to spend a June Summer morning. Until tomorrow, see you on the road!

    20 Jun 2019

Oh what a day! Team mate Ann came to the trailer so we could take the rail trail together into Peterborough, do lunch and then return. The weather was great, conditions ideal so we set off. The rail trail is fine but as I have lamented before it is a layer of gravel and it is flat. So no coasting. We had to pedal the entire time. It feels like being in a spin class. If you don’t pedal the wheel stops. It took two hours to go 30 k into Peterborough. We watched a couple of locks in action and had a great lunch along the river. During lunch big thunder clouds moved in so we figured we better hustle back. Well, we did our best! It didn’t rain but man am I tired! Tomorrow’s ride is going to hurt! Until then...see you on the road!

I am back at the trailer. I made some adjustments to my route tested it out today. I had a nice ride into Hastings and back. Met up with a few critters along the way including a fox and this guy who was crossing my path. It was nice to know the is someone going slower than me on the trail! Until tomorrow, see you on the trail!

    15 Jun 2019

I don’t know if you can really tell from this picture how windy it is. It is a real estate sign that is being blown in a gust of wind. For the second day in a row the wind has been a huge factor in my ride. My hands and shoulders are tired from gripping my bike so hard to keep from falling over in the cross wind. My wish for tomorrow is a calm, sunny ride...fingers crossed! See you on the road!

    14 Jun 2019

Today the weather cooperated and allowed me to cycle to a luncheon with my former colleagues. Off I went to Port Perry which is about 30 k from my home. Got a few extra k in to ensure I was on the safest roads. A delicious lunch and great conversation and then a couple hours later I was back on my bike and cycling home. My Bike Chick teammate joined me in my ride home. Although there was no rain today and we had sunny skies it was WINDY! More than once I felt that a gust of wind was going to blow me right off my bike. Home safe though and happy! Until tomorrow, see you on the roads.

I was up early to swim but decided to ride instead to hopefully beat the rain. I didn’t quite have a rain free ride but I only had light drizzle and got back just before the heavy rain started...and now I have the whole day ahead of me...I call that a win. Until tomorrow, see you on the road!

Both myself and my teammate Ann agree that the ride we did today is our happy ride. Out and back to Ajax Rotary Park along the Waterfront trail. The view is awesome, the road for the most part is smooth and the people you meet are friendly. Thanks to Ann (pictured) today for helping me push a few extra kms. Getting close to the halfway mark! 10 Jun 2019

Pretty proud of myself for getting on my bike and putting in my 30 k in the pouring rain this morning. Still having some technical difficulties with tracking devices. Luckily I have 3 methods of recording...needed the third today. I think sogginess interfered somehow with GPS functions.

One advantage to the rain...I didn’t once think about my tired legs or sore butt during the ride because I was so focused on my route, puddles and making sure I was visible to cars. Hopefully sunny skies tomorrow. Until then, see you on the road!

I MADE IT! 100 km. Conditions were fantastic so that made the day go quickly. As well it was great to be riding with my Bike Chick team mate!

The only glitch was at the end of the ride the App had registered my ride as being 93 k and Ann’s as 100. Huh? We did the exact same ride! Good thing I run back ups! MapMyRide had me covered. Hotter tomorrow, going to get an start. Until then, see you on the road!

    6 Jun 2019

Today I went east in the opposite direction than yesterday on the Lang-Hastings Trail. The trail is more bike friendly in this direction. I went as far as Heritage Line which would take me into Keene, before turning back. Only about 10 k shy of Peterborough Definitely a future ride on a day without rain in the forecast. The trail was a little lonely, I only met 3 dog walkers in 2 hours, but it was a beautiful morning to be out enjoying nature. Until tomorrow, see you on the road!

  • June 4 - First Trailer Ride
    6 Jun 2019

My first ride at the trailer turned out to be tougher than I expected. The roads near the trailer are narrow and busy but fortunately I am only 3 k from the Hastings-Lang Rail Trail. To stay safe this is what I will predominantly use when I am at the trailer. First of all, the road I take to get to the trail was recently serviced with fresh sand and gravel. No more pot holes but hard to go up hill on a bike when the wheels keep slipping. Second, this was my first time past Hastings on the trail. NOT bike friendly! Big loose stones and ruts. I will have to explore alternatives to get in my 30 k in. That’s okay, I like exploring! Until tomorrow, see you on the road!

    3 Jun 2019

It was a cool but sunny morning today, so I bundled up and head down to the Waterfront Trail. A beautiful morning but because of the cool temperatures, only the die hards were out doing their morning walks. I took this photo at my turn around point at Rotary Park in Ajax. The sky was so clear that the CN tower was easy to see. I am don’t think my camera if good enough to capture it but I tried! Lots of wildlife and again, the wind (sigh), although today I did get to enjoy it at my back for some of the route...It was a great way to start the day! Until tomorrow...headed to the trailer...see you on the road...

  • Suck It Up
    2 Jun 2019

Today, due to life scheduling, we decided the best approach was for me to do a point to point ride and then I would get picked up so I could accompany my partner to a family BBQ. This route is one of my faithful rides up to Utica and Epsom that I like because of the DOWNHILL ON THE WAY BACK! As I lamented that this would mean that I would only get to ride one way and that direction was UP HILL, my partner told me to suck it up! I thought this was a little unfair as he was not the one riding! I did suck it up and more, because as I made my way north of Whitby the wind got stronger IN MY FACE! So now not only was I riding predominately uphill, but also into the wind, knowing I wasn’t going to get the thrill of the return trip! Needless to say. It was a tough ride today, but for kids who get cancer, they are fighting an uphill battle against the wind EVERY day. My 2 hour ride wasn’t so bad...I ride in hope that one day no kids will have to face an uphill battle against the wind. Until tomorrow, see you on the road,
