My Story

26 Mar 2018

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

My Challenge

  • Thank You for helping me in the fight against kids' cancer
    5 Jul 2019

I did it. Last month, I pedaled 1199.0km in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer. I couldn't have done it without your support and encouragement.

It was a tough challenge, but worth it. And I've now raised $3586 to end childhood cancer and save little lives.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored my challenge. Your generous support will fund research to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

  • I've exceeded my riding goal! Thank you for your support
    26 Jun 2019

This month, I've been riding every day in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer.

And today after riding 75 Km to Port Credit and back, I exceeded my personal goal of 1000 Km.

I couldn't have done it without your support. Whenever I received another donation toward my fundraising goal I was inspired to ride more.

There are still 5 days to go in the challenge. So even though I reached my target for riding, I will continue to ride every day in June.

Thank you so much for joining me in the fight against childhood cancer.

  • Thank You
    20 Jun 2019

I received the following letter today and thought I would share it with you, my friends and sponsors.

    Dear Grace,

I hope you're well and your legs don't hate you (yet).

Over the past 19 days, riders from every province and territory have pedaled 1,437,831 km on all types of bikes and in all kinds of weather. It's been amazing to witness this fantastic event grow over the past 4 years, and the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge is set to break all the records.

Here's just some of the key stats so far this month:

    • 22,584 riders are taking part from all corners of the country.

    • 66,901 individual donations have been received to support your efforts.

    • $3,969,860 has been raised (so far), which is incredible.

    • Together, we've logged 79,239 rides and ridden a total of 1,437,831 km which is the equivalent of pedaling for 2,863 days (non-stop).

    ...and we're not done yet.

Grace, YOU are part of our movement to end childhood cancer.

On the other side, over those 19 days you've been riding in the challenge:

    • 73 families have heard the painful words, "your child has cancer".

    • We've lost 8 children to this terrible disease.

These families deserve more effective treatments and better outcomes for their kids. And that's why cancer research is so important to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. While our month of riding will make a huge difference to the children, siblings, parents and families affected by cancer, we can all strive for the day when childhood cancer is a distant memory.

As you get out on your bike over these next 11 days, remember these kids as you climb those hills and turn those pedals...

THANK YOU so much for riding this month to fight kids' cancer.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Jamie

  • Kick Cancer's Butt Day received an amazing response thanks to you
    14 Jun 2019

Kick Cancer's Butt Day raised $783,246 to fight kids' cancer!

It's incredible. THANK YOU so much for your butt-kicking donations to give kids like Alex, Simi and Matteo the brighter futures they deserve.

Yesterday was a record day for the Great Cycle Challenge! The day was crazy, but then the support really climbed into the night! (Weren't people watching the Raptors win their first ever NBA title?)

The Sick Kids' families were so excited to see everyone taking action on the day to end childhood cancer. Many of them were watching the site all day and they really could not believe it. :)

And that's just one more great thing you've done through your donations...you've given these families a reason to smile, and more importantly, you've given them hope for a cancer-free future and the support they need to continue their fight to beat this awful disease.

As you know, three wonderful supporters, Jake Herman, John Francis and Katie Taylor were personally matching donations up to $500,000...

And as outlined when this amazing pledge was announced, if we were to reach the $500,000 limit we'd distribute the matched donations across all riders, based on a percentage of what was raised over the 1 day of Kick Cancer's Butt Day. This is the fairest way to ensure that everyone who made the effort, gets the reward. :)

But unfortunately, this does mean that all your donations could not be matched completely, so I'll receive a portion of the $500k toward my fundraising goal based on the total I raised. The calculation was done as follows:

$500,000 / $783,246 = 63.84% - so 63.84% of the total I raised was matched on Kick Cancer's Butt Day and added to my fundraising page. That's an amazing $501.12 more than the $835 my sponsors contributed!

And it's all for these amazing kids.

Last year, the match funds had to be allocated in a similar way, which is why Sick Kids Foundation sought additional support this year (to ensure they could match a larger amount), they had an additional $200,000 in matched funding this year but the response was even more than they imagined! It's a great problem to have.

That brings me up to 72% of my fundraising goal. And I'm 54% of my riding goal with 16 1/2 more days to go.

  • Today (Thursday June 13) is Kick Cancer's Butt Day
    14 Jun 2019

THANK YOU for supporting my efforts in the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer. Today I received almost $800 in new donations that will be matched by three special donors.

Your generous donations will support SickKids' Foundation to allow them to continue their work to care for these kids, develop innovative treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Because in Canada, approximately 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

But with your support, we hope to change that.

Please take a look at my fundraising page to view my progress:

    https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/GraceBugg/g

If you know anyone else who might be interested in supporting this cause, it's not too late to take advantage of the matching available today, please feel free to forward this message.

Thanks again, your support is greatly appreciated.

  • Tribute Day
    23 May 2019

Next month, I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer. My goal is to pedal 1000km...and my challenge starts NEXT WEEK.

Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

While riding next month I will be thinking of my cousin Grant, who lost a daughter to cancer. I will also be thinking of my friends Bruce, Len and Mike, who are living with cancer, and my friends Betty, Carole, Christie, Guil and Suzanne, who are survivors.

Please support my challenge to end childhood cancer and save little lives by making a donation through my page:
