My Story

18 Jun 2019

This June, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

My Challenge

  • Thanks and PMA
    30 Jun 2019

Completed my last ride for the Sick Kids Great Cycle Challenge today. Peddled 60.9km to finish the month long challenge with 1,313km.

Thank you Great Cycle Challenge Canada for putting on such an amazing charity event that anyone can participate in and keeping all of us motivated by sharing the stories of the children that are currently going through treatment.

Thank you so much to my partner in crime for being so supportive this month!

Thank you to all of my sponsors, you have no idea how much you helped motivate me this month.

Thank you Collective Haus, Comics North and Hidden Level Games, Bike Sudbury and everyone else that helped raise awareness of this charity for me!

Thank you The Outside Store for tuning up my bike before the start of the month and for all of my cycling needs, lots of tubes.

Thank you Cancer Bats for making amazing music that I used as the soundtrack for all of the rides over the past month. I actually named everyone of my ride after a line from their song French Immersion. Their music helped me stay positive through a lot of hard times not only during this past month riding but in life itself. It was very fitting that the last song that was playing while I ended today’s ride was PMA ‘till I’m DOA.

Now that this ride is done, I want to jump in a lake!

  • Blow Out!
    29 Jun 2019

Got up nice and early today to try to tackle a long ride and 44km into the ride my rear tire blew out, not the tube, the tire.

So now I am sitting on the side of a highway waiting for my partner in crime to come pick me up so that I can go home and change the tire so that I can get back on the road later today.

Life is funny like that, sometimes something happens to change things in an instant. As I ponder this moment it makes me reflect on how much being diagnosed with cancer changes someone’s life and their close circle of family and friends lives.

Cancer may attack one person at a time but the collateral damage that is done to that persons circle of family, friends, doctors, nurses, and other support and medical staff is both devastating and beautiful.

The beauty is found in the companionship and support and is the reason why I do rides like this.

Cancer affects everyone in some way or another and how we deal with it defines us. I ride to show my support to those that have passed fighting their battles, for those currently facing the battle, to raise awareness, and to help fund treatments and research.

This blown out tire isn’t going to stop me. It as well as the thoughts of everyone who has been affected by cancer is going to motivate me to ride more!

    Blow Out!

  • Not Done Yet!
    26 Jun 2019

Had to take some time away from riding over the past couple of days due to prior engagements and health reasons.

Cancer doesn’t take days off so I was saddened that I couldn’t ride to do my part to help in the ongoing battle and excited to get back on the saddle today.

On the bright side thankfully we were able to bring in some more donations over the past few days.

Thank you so much everyone that has donated and future donators you all rock!

Let’s keep this momentum going and keep pushing the peddles!

  • For Bubba
    15 Jun 2019

I’m not just riding to fight kids cancer I’m riding to fight all cancer!

Last year when I got back on the bike I challenged myself to complete a 100km ride.

When attempting that ride I passed by a rider sitting on the side of the road and asked if he was okay. He relied saying he was just taking a break, so I continued on riding.

Later I passed by again and noticed he was still sitting on the side of the road so I stoped to talk to him.

He introduced himself as James but everyone calls him Bubba and he told me that he was on a training ride for the Wounded Warriors - Highway of Heroes Bike Ride.

I congratulated him on taking up such a momentous task as I had completed a number of cancer charity bike rides in the past and know how much goes into training for something like that.

He thanked me for the rides I did in the past and then shared with me that he was fighting cancer for the second time.

He told me he was having a rough time on the training ride and was only a couple of kilometres away from his car and that he was probably going to call someone to come and pick him up.

I encouraged him to continue on with his ride and to do the charity ride as well as he was so close to finishing his ride and that he would have an amazing time doing the ride.

After talking a bit longer he got back on his bike and finished his training ride. He later went on to crush the Wounded Warriors Highway of Heroes Bike Ride.

I didn’t reach my goal that day as the day ran out of daylight and I only reached 80km.

Bubba lost his battle later in the year but that one chance encounter encouraged me to continue fighting for everyone battling cancer.

Today I completed that ride I couldn’t last year and Bubba this ride was for you.

    4 Jun 2019

Thank you all so much for all the wonderful support and donations! You are all superstars and it looks like I will have to raise my fundraising goal once again!

After going hard over the weekend I’m taking a rest day so that my body can heal up so that I can crush more KMs tomorrow!

There is rain in the forecast for tomorrow, but that won’t keep me off the bike as I will be riding on my trainer and keeping track of the distance on an odometer.

Rain or shine I will ride for those fighting for their lives!

Wow! There is only one sleep left to go before this challenge starts and to say I’m excited is an understatement as I can’t wait to get out there and peddle my ass off to help out all of the children that are battling cancer right now and in the future at Sick Kids!

I want to say a very big thank you to everyone that has already donated and another big thank you to everyone that will!

Together we have nearly reached my intial goal so let’s increase it and try to raise as much as possible for this worthy cause.
