My Story

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? Because right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

So I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Your support will change little lives.

Thank you.

Daniella

  • My eyes are leaking
    23 Aug 2020

Yesterday my little sticks and I eclipsed our goal of 300km.

The finish was exactly how I started this...quite leisurely. I wasn’t wearing my jersey, wasn’t riding my super speedy bike. Just me alone taking in the scenery as my ancient mountain bike and it’s grand network of cobwebs. My steady eddy of a contraption that shifts gears when it feels like it and voluntarily drops its kickstand when it decides there is something interesting to see. There was oddly something magical though, something important about using this bike to hit 300km.

So, along side the road my eyes leaked a little as I thought about why this ride is so important. A personal test of dedication and endurance, but a much larger commitment to keep peddling on behalf of all the kids who can’t.

My road bike will be released from the bike hospital on Monday, and together we will embark on the next 100km.

If you haven’t yet told your friends, please do.

This is after all, for the kids .

    ❤️

  • Bring it on
    22 Aug 2020

It’s been a week. Not only did I experience 1 flat on a planned 50km ride along a highway but a second flat on the same tire the very next day. After removing the random sliver width shrapnel from my wheel I was ready to rock. Yesterday on a planned 40km route that presented me with a postman’s view of weather systems and a 1km long hill located with gorgeous allure at Royal Roads University, I crashed.

Yes. I crashed. While traversing perpendicular over rail, my tire slid out from under me. Causing; at a speed of 25km p/h, to lose control of my bike and pitch over the handlebars to the left.

Up like a jack rabbit, my first thought was ‘my bike!’ with one hand I picked it up and moved to the side of the road. A bent de-railer, brakes that required resetting and a lot of dirt.

My ride ended shy of 40k but that’s ok.

This week has made me all the more determined to not only achieve my 300k goal but increase it to 400k

Let’s show this bike who’s boss!

    Bring it on

  • My heart is exploding
    14 Aug 2020

Yesterday was incredibly overwhelming for me. My heart is so full that it’s making my eyes leak!

I reached out and asked for help to raise money so together we could help improve the lives of kids fighting cancer. And you showed up! You more than showed up coming together to achieve $4,921!

Donations continue to come in and I still have a bottle drive to complete and here I sit speechless at your generosity.

From the bottom of my heart that’s way too big for my little body I thank you!!!

Donations will continue to be accepted until the end of August

    ❤️❤️

  • Half way there!
    11 Aug 2020

Here it is, only 7 days of riding and I’m 51% of the way to my 300km goal and if I am to be bold, it feels like I could easily surpass it.

Thursday is an incredibly important day. With so much gratitude, I am thrilled to share with you that the Garron family will be matching donations in honour of their son Michael who passed away at the age of 13 in 1975.

The same year I was born.

I will be posting more information; and, if you follow me on Facebook I encourage you to share my link as well as the Michael Garron story.

Thank you everyone for your unwavering support thus far!

    ❤️

  • Pavement doesn’t mean smooth
    6 Aug 2020

Ever wonder why cyclists don’t use the paved path that runs parallel to many roads? The answer is simple and will surprise you.

The pavement on paths is dangerous. Often cracked, riddled with small holes and in such dis-repair that riding them could end in disaster.

For those of us on road bikes, our tires are so thin that these pavement fails could mean a tire blow out; or worse, we could find ourselves hitting a crack that sends us over the handlebars. And if your feet are clipped into your peddles that also means the bike is going to land on top of you.

When a road needs re-paving the contract never includes the path. So, for safety reasons cyclists will ride the shoulder. It may sound odd, but it is truly much safer for us there.

Today I thank the drivers who granted me space as my little sticks peddled. And the kids? Well they thank you as well because I was able to complete my ride successfully and safely.

  • It’s not always glamorous
    30 Jul 2020

It’s true. Some of these rides are happening mere minutes after I roll out of bed and most people aren’t even awake. With less cars on the road I’ve discovered the gorgeous hours between 530-8am are the best for my two wheels to hit the road. And it’s safer.

    17 Jul 2020

Not necessarily one of my favourite things to do but it’s a perfect way to increase your strength and endurance. 30km yesterday of it and guess what? It would have been easy to simply give up, find a flat route instead, but with regular shifting and keeping my legs moving it wasn’t so bad .... and today..... today will be another ride. My sticks are ready!
